Last Thursday, the GIIN, Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and The Rockefeller Foundation hosted a gathering with impact investors and industry leaders to celebrate the decade and a half since the GIIN was founded – but for an anniversary event, the focus was squarely on the future. Since its launch at CGI’s 2009 Annual Meeting, the GIIN has been at the forefront of building a worldwide movement, community and industry all dedicated to impact investing. And while the market was sized at an impressive $1.57 trillion USD last year, the imperative to transform how the world invests capital is more urgent than ever. The Winter Symposium (put on by Columbia University SPS MS in Strategic Communication) is one of the most reliably wonderful and edifying days of the year. On Friday last week, some +300 students, alumni, faculty and experts in the Communications profession gathered on campus to discuss creativity -- where we get it, how we strategically apply it, how we cultivate it and more. I had the privilege to facilitate an all-star panel with Meta's VP and global head of creative shop, Jimmie Stone, IBM's VP of brand and content strategy, Teresa Yoo, Clinton Global Initiative's Chief Content, Communications and Marketing officer, Craig Minassian and M Booth's Chief Creative Director, Adrianna G. Bevilaqua. We all got a chance to learn from these pros -- how they're thinking about "creative" versus "creativity" in an algorithmic age, navigating the shifting winds of politics, and leading teams of diverse, creative, strategic thinkers to produce the insghts-and-data-driven communications and marketing that customers and clients demand. It's enormously generous for these individuals -- and the firms employing them -- to invest their time sharing their experience, expertise and insights with the Columbia community. As a lecturer and Advisory Board member, I'm grateful -- and as a human, I'm touched and inspired! I was also beyond moved by the insights and extraordinary story of keynote speaker, Dr. Sheena Iyengar, who shared with us her incredible method and practice of Think Bigger -- my friends, do not snooze on her work! The breakout sessions were illuminating -- including a breathtaking and immediately applicable session on using AI to develop content (including animation) from Samantha Stark of Phyusion and a deep dive on the legal and intellectual property considerations of AI with my friend and colleague, Frank J. Oswald. The day concluded with a student talent show. To be honest, I was expecting case studies. Instead, we were treated to poetry, photography, comedy, and music that literally had the crowd laughing and crying together. I have chills running up my spine as I type this little recap...it was that good. If anyone in your network is considering a master in strategic comms, I hope you'll consider Columbia University SPS MS in Strategic Communication. Thanks to the leadership of Kristine Billmyer, Jesse Scinto and Charlene P. and Ed Yanisch this is not just a program with a great curriculum, but a powerfully enriching community. #strategiccomms
