Building Tomorrow Today
About us
At COLAS, we are raising the standard for quality construction with a focus on sustainability, equity, and access to opportunity; we build to inspire community. We prioritize people over profits, and we're proud to be a leader in the construction industry for commercial real estate. Our story began in 1997 in Portland, a city we are proud to call home and build for, reshaping the landscape to serve the community. As an American general contracting firm founded by Hermann Colas, Jr., a scholar and U.S. Veteran with proud Haitian roots, we remain true to our values. We build with excellence, sustainability, and the future in mind while dedicating resources to lift others as we climb. Our dedication to the construction industry was not inspired by winning awards, however, COLAS is honored to be among Oregon's Most Admired Companies for four consecutive years (2018-2021). Colas Construction is the only construction firm to win top honors in safety with the Outstanding Rose and the Grand Rose Awards in two consecutive years in 2020 and 2021. In addition, COLAS is the proud recipient of the ROSE Safety Award and the PRIDE Safety Award over multiple years. We are proud to have achieved the highest level of recognition for safety and value being a leader in the commercial construction industry. The Grand Opening for the Hazel Ying Lee Apartments was a phenomenal celebration! As the largest affordable housing project built from the Portland Housing Bond, featuring 206 new homes, this project underscores the power of unity and dedication in addressing housing needs and fostering community well-being. Our appreciation to each leader who spoke to commemorate this joyful occasion- Home Forward CEO Ivory Mathews, City of Portland Commissioner Carmen Caballero Rubio, Joint Office of Homeless Services Director Daniel Field, Oregon Housing & Community Services (OHCS), Mary Li, U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, Region 10 Administrator, Andrew Lofton, and our President & CEO of Colas Construction, Andrew Colas! It was wonderful to connect with the family of Hazel Ying Lee, who served during World War II. She was a trailblazer for women and Chinese Americans in aviation, and we are forever inspired that her story will be known. A loud round of applause for our project partners and team! The COLAS Team is proud to contribute to the work for Project Agate, the result of years of collaboration among leading experts, delivering on the explicit goal of setting higher industry standards in development and construction. Our appreciation to Mackenzie for this exciting opportunity to share! #buildingtomorrowtoday
Project Agate is about shared prosperity and sustainable economic growth for the greater Portland region. The project is led by the Port of Portland and will eventually provide more than 150 quality jobs, as defined by The Port’s quality employer standards. A special part of the project are the requirements, written into the Master Services Agreement, that the more experienced contractors hire and mentor small businesses, particularly local businesses and BIPOC owned businesses. To create this development The Port worked with Specht Properties, Inc and COLAS DEVELOPMENT GROUP while also collaborating with the City of Gresham. Mackenzie was the lead designer for the project, along with design, construction, and real estate partners: Summit Engineering, BIM Connection LLC, Bainbridge Design, Perlo Construction, Colas Construction, JLL, and Salvador Bloom Properties.
