As part of a series introducing Corio’s extraordinary team, we caught up for a conversation with our Head of Engineering and Construction, Ole Bigum Nielsen. Ole can trace his career back to some of the UK’s pioneering offshore wind projects, including the Thanet offshore wind farm which began operating in 2010. Now, at Corio, Ole has built an expert Engineering and Construction Team in support of our global pipeline of offshore wind projects across Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas. “We have very capable teams supporting our projects both in the development phase and also in the earlier stages of origination. We are a fairly lean team, with highly-qualified team members across the core disciplines that you basically need to have in a development company. “You could say that it’s been about building quality rather than quantity, and we really do have that.” With offshore wind farms taking many years to go from origination to construction and operations, Ole has a clear view that experience and decision-making are integral to the successful delivery of our projects. “Offshore wind projects are by definition complex - the time from the first thoughts to the end of construction are typically up to 8-10 years – maybe even longer. During that period many decisions are to be made and typically early-stage decisions set the direction for the project afterwards. “Therefore it is crucial to make the right decisions at the right time. Experience is often what makes the difference and we absolutely have that experience within Corio’s Engineering and Construction Team.” As for the future, Ole is confident that the long-term prospects for offshore wind are bright, and that there is still much to be achieved through innovation and collaboration across and beyond the industry. “Everything we are doing is a team effort and none of us can deliver an offshore wind project on our own. It’s all based on collaboration and making use of everyone; getting the best out of everyone,” he says. “There's still so much need for green energy coming from offshore wind turbines - the world needs clean renewable energy and there's a lot of sea and coastline that can be used to provide it.” At Corio Generation, CEO Jonathan Cole, Ole and Corio’s wider Extraordinary Team have been building a successful award-winning offshore wind business. In just over two years, Corio’s team has: - Doubled our project portfolio to around 30 GW. - Been successful in multiple auctions from the USA, to Ireland and Taiwan. - Significantly progressed projects in the UK, South Korea, Australia and beyond. - Entered new markets such as Brazil, Philippines, Norway, Vietnam, Greece, Portugal and Spain. - Tripled our diverse international workforce, comprising more than 30 nationalities. A determined team of more than 20 Corio colleagues gathered in the rain-soaked and muddy English countryside last Saturday to take part in Tough Mudder, a charity fundraising event and punishing endurance challenge. 🏃♀️ At Corio, we are determined to make a positive impact in everything we do, from developing pioneering offshore wind projects, to taking on this challenge in support of Cancer Research UK (CRUK). Several days on, the joints ache, the muscles have cramped and there’s still sludge falling out of our ears. It might not sound like a fun day out to everyone, but completing a Tough Mudder event has an appeal all of its own. It encompasses some actual fun but also tenacity, determination, teamwork and, perhaps most of all, working with others for the greater good. 👍 Every Corio colleague who set off at the starting gun of Tough Mudder 2024 supported each other and gave their all, and every one of us crossed the finishing line several hours later – battered, bruised, wet and cold, but also proud and elated. 💪 We are Corio and we are determined to make a positive impact. #offshorewind #renewableenergy #ToughMudder

🏢Our CEO, Jonathan Cole, has been in New York speaking with leaders of government, industry and civil society about ways to deliver on a global commitment to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, as part of the first ever Global Renewables Summit. The week’s agenda began with a high-hevel Ministerial Roundtable organised through the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), of which Corio was one of the founding industry members. Jonathan spoke about harnessing the combined power of the private and public sectors towards financing and developing major renewable projects like offshore wind farms. “To most efficiently use the capital we have, we need to do whatever we can to share risk, reduce development timelines and reduce the cost of capital, especially for emerging markets,” he said. 🗺️ This was followed by a Global Renewables Summit roundtable on supply chains, at which Jonathan spoke about the need to address bottlenecks. Jonathan said the best way to create resilient supply chains is to stimulate new capacity using rational industrial policies designed to promote localisation, regionalisation and globalisation. Corio is a proud supporter and member of the Global Renewables Alliance, Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). Our team in Vietnam was delighted to participate in the Vietnam State of Energy Transition Conference in Hanoi, where Corio’s Head of APAC, Yi-Hua Lu, joined a panel discussion on collaboration between public and private sectors to unlock economic opportunities in the energy transition. “With its abundant offshore wind resources and strategic location, Vietnam is poised to supply goods and services for offshore wind projects across the Asia Pacific,” Yi-Hua said. “Clear signals from the Vietnamese government regarding the offshore wind pipeline, along with the right incentives to foster a robust local supply chain, will help Vietnam develop a strong offshore wind industry." Corio has proposed to develop a 1,000 MW pilot offshore wind project in Vietnam, the first phase of our 3,000 MW project in Binh Thuan Province, in partnership with Vietnam Electricity (EVN) subsidiary, Power Generation Corporation 3 (EVNGenCo3). EVN is Vietnam's largest state-owned power company. “At Corio, we are committed to collaborating with local partners to kick-start the offshore wind industry in Vietnam, provided we secure the necessary licenses. Together, we aim to help state-owned companies become leading offshore wind developers and support their transition from brown to green energy,” Yi-Hua added. The conference is part of the Future of Electricity-Vietnam (FE-V) initiative, led by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, with support from the Central Economic Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam. FE-V aims to strengthen ties between the Australian and Vietnamese governments and the private sector through policy dialogues and targeted research. The offshore wind sector is creating new green jobs across multiple trades and occupations, from manufacturing, operations and maintenance, installation and grid connections, to stakeholder engagement, health, safety and environment, financing and other professional services. Building new offshore wind projects can transform long neglected coastal communities by providing new work and investment opportunities. In the UK alone, the number of people directly employed in the offshore wind industry is forecast to hit more than 100,000 by 2030. Speaking at The Green Jobs Revolution conference at The Conduit in London, our CEO Jonathan Cole urged governments to be bold in embracing the energy transition, working to identify sectors of the economy that can best support the new green supply chain, and helping to retrain those working in fossil fuel-based industries. “We need to go as fast and hard as we can in delivering the energy transition and create as many jobs as we can along the way,” Jonathan said in a panel discussion with Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, and Afsheen Kabir Rashid MBE, co-founder and CEO of Repowering London. The Green Jobs conference was hosted at The Conduit by co-founder and CEO Paul van Zyl, with a keynote address by Lord Adair Turner, Chair of the Energy Transitions Commission. https://lnkd.in/e5mC2ZYM Data source: OWIC's Offshore Wind Skills Intelligence report (June 2023) Visit Corio's website: https://lnkd.in/grxPqjTg #offshorewind #windenergy
