COP16 Colombia left us wanting more in terms of an international agreement on funding for global action against climate change. 🌎But one of the most positive outcomes was the historic agreement establishing a subsidiary body that gives indigenous groups a voice on future nature conservation decisions. Indigenous communities are often the primary stewards of landscapes and ecosystems, but they’re disproportionately impacted by environmental degradation. At Cultivo, we believe that including indigenous and local perspectives and expertise on conservation strategies is critical, not only because of the deep traditional knowledge these communities possess, but also to ensure environmental issues are addressed in a holistic and equitable way. 🌿 Along with giving indigenous communities a voice in how environmental issues are approached, countries at Cop16 also agreed to a genetic information fee of 0.1% on companies’ revenues on products derived from research on animals, plants or microorganisms in biotechnologies. That money will be directed into a new fund, with 50% reaching Indigenous communities. 🌳 “‘This (fee) will enable these communities, including women and youth to finally share in the profits,’ said Ginette Hemley, senior vice president for wildlife at the World Wildlife Fund.” https://lnkd.in/gVryQwDx #indigenousrights #indigenouspeoples #indigenous #sustainability #investinnature #naturalcapital #cop16 #cop
About us
Cultivo accelerates investment into nature at scale. We do this by showing how investing in natural capital can generate healthy financial returns that are good for nature and society. - We use proprietary algorithms and remote sensor technologies to identify high quality projects and forecast the natural capital returns. - We then package those projects into investment products for financial institutions and corporations to invest in. - The investment finances sustainable activities that restore and protect nature, such as regenerative grazing or forest management. - Cash flows from the natural capital flows (e.g. carbon or water offsets) are generated by these activities, providing reliable long term income to the project and financial returns to the investors.

“The next six years will be critical for the preservation and restoration of the world’s nature systems.” - Hugh Bromley, Head of Food, Agriculture and Nature Research at BloombergNEF A new report from BloombergNEF (BNEF) shows that the gap between current biodiversity finance and future needs has widened to $942 billion, and some $1.15 trillion in biodiversity financial flows will be needed in 2030 to restore and maintain biodiversity, five times the $208 billion per year flowing to biodiversity right now. 🌿 🌳 From the report: “Funding must prioritize the most biodiverse, valuable and threatened biomes across the developing world.... This must be driven by both public and private finance – from debt-for-nature swaps to green and sustainable bonds and carbon offset issuance, among other tools.” 🌲 Learn how Cultivo’s accelerating investment into nature and helping to close the funding gap at cultivo.land #NatureTech #ClimateAction #NaturePositive #InvestInNature #Sustainability #NaturalCapital

The WWF just released their 2024 Living Planet Report, and the findings are harrowing. “Over the past 50 years (1970–2020), the average size of wildlife populations has shrunk by 73%, with calamitous implications for the ecosystems they support and our planet in general.” 🌍 “Freshwater populations have suffered the heaviest declines, falling by 85%, followed by terrestrial (69%) and marine populations (56%).” 🐟 “At a regional level, the fastest declines have been seen in Latin America and the Caribbean – a concerning 95% decline – followed by Africa (76%) and the Asia and the Pacific (60%). Declines have been less dramatic in Europe and Central Asia (35%) and North America (39%), but this reflects the fact that large-scale impacts on nature were already apparent before 1970 in these regions.” ⚠️ “It’s no exaggeration to say that what happens in the next five years will determine the future of life on Earth.” ⏰ But the report also offers a ray of hope: “Working with nature to address specific societal issues – known as nature-based solutions – holds great promise to advance global goals on climate, nature, and sustainable development.” 🌿 Along with our investors, partner organizations, and global communities, Cultivo is working to make that happen. 🚨 #BREAKING: This is a code red for nature. Species population numbers have plummeted by 73% on average since 1970. This is getting worse over time, when it should be getting better. Vital ecosystems are on the brink of collapse. We’re dangerously close to tipping points, where the damage to our planet will cause irreversible impacts on all our lives. We must turn things around immediately. Urgent action is needed now – not tomorrow or next year. 🗣 Share this video to #ActForOurPlanet. https://lnkd.in/d-ESAMH #LPR2024 #LivingPlanetReport

We’re back from Climate Week NYC and reflecting on the major themes, learnings, and opportunities highlighted in New York. We couldn’t agree more with Nature4Climate that this year’s events largely highlighted: Advances in scaling investment in natural climate solutions. 💰 How nature-tech is bridging the gap between environmental responsibility and corporate sustainability. 💻 And the progress being made in the voluntary carbon markets in terms of integrity, speed, and scale. 🌳 Momentum for nature is building, but there’s still a lot of hard work to be done. And the key to progress is collaboration. Reach out if you want to explore how you can partner with Cultivo to regenerate nature at scale. #climateweekNYC #climateaction #investinnature #sustainability #naturalcapital #climateaction #carbonremoval #naturebasedsolutions
#Recap. It’s difficult to distill all that happened during #ClimateWeekNYC into a few bullet points, which will never be able to capture the richness and diversity of the conversations, especially regarding investments in nature-based solutions. While we are still not breaking out of the climate bubble as much as we should, it’s clear that it has gotten bigger. The Climate Group says that this year, speaker and event requests increased by 50% compared to 2023 across all of Climate Week. At the Nature Hub, we received more than 4,500 applications to attend, hosted 220 speakers across 39 events, and spoke to audiences that included many new faces, including more representation from the financial sector. More broadly, there were no fewer than 120 events throughout the week dedicated to forests alone. Inside and outside the bubble, here are a few key trends and important nature announcements we observed during the last week. #WithNature #NaturePositive #climateaction The Nature Conservancy WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development World Resources Institute Bezos Earth Fund Capitals Coalition Brunswick Group High-Level Climate Champions Conservation International Nature Positive Initiative Rainforest Foundation Norway Wildlife Conservation Society African Natural Capital Alliance Space Intelligence Calculus Carbon FSD Africa BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group

Heading to Climate Week NYC? Don’t forget to take a few mins to relax and recharge in nature! 🌿 Here are five easy-to-access spots in and around Manhattan, where you can unwind on the greener side of the concrete jungle, all recommended by Cultivo’s resident New Yorker, Gaby Peña Fraga: 🏞️ Central Park’s “Quiet Zones”: Everyone knows New York’s Central Park. But did you know eight areas within the park are designated "quiet zones?” Places like the East Green, Sheep Meadow, and the famous Strawberry Fields are designed for visitors to “relax and enjoy the surroundings.” https://lnkd.in/gXgyucWi 🌳 The High Line: If Central Park is the oldest landscaped park in the United States, the High Line is one of New York’s newest. A public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side, the High Line opened in 2009 as a hybrid public space where visitors experience nature, art, and design. https://lnkd.in/gVVhJzJ 🪻 New York Botanical Garden: The Bronx’s NYBG considers itself “a museum of living plant collections arranged in gardens and landscapes across its National Historic Landmark site.” Want to experience some serious biodiversity in person? The garden’s 250-acre (100 ha) landscape contains over one million living plants. https://lnkd.in/g6Yxdnx2 🌲 Prospect Park: Headed to Brooklyn? Designed by the same landscape architects behind Central Park, Prospect Park is widely known for its intricate man-made wetlands and its trees, which represent the bulk of Brooklyn's remaining indigenous forest. https://lnkd.in/gsgdp26h ⛵ Brooklyn Bridge Park: Also sitting on the Brooklyn side of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge Park features a design guided by the concept of “post-industrial nature,” and “uses unabashedly man-made landscapes to kick-start new site ecologies that can thrive and evolve in a heavy-use urban setting." https://lnkd.in/g_TXWVRx #climateweekNYC
