About us
Ecotope has provided sustainable building design consulting and engineering services in the Pacific Northwest for over 40 years. We are a partner-owned small business providing expertise on all aspects of sustainability in buildings including heating systems, ventilation systems, water conservation, controls, building envelope performance, alternative energy systems, controls, and system interactions. Our company was formed in 1975 to target sustainability and added mechanical engineering services in the mid-1990s to directly influence energy-efficient designs. Our work designing buildings happens at the intersection of research, design, and policy. We have consistently delivered low energy outcomes, contributing to over 150 net-zero energy ready buildings and producing some of the lowest energy use buildings in the western U.S. At Ecotope, we pride ourselves on identifying and understanding the unique needs of our clients and going beyond what is expected to meet them. For us, this work represents an opportunity to ensure that cost-effective energy and resource-efficient designs are incorporated into multifamily buildings in the Pacific Northwest.

We're thrilled to share the success of our recent dairy retrofit project! In collaboration with Bonneville Power Administration's Emerging Technology Department and Washington State University Energy Program, Ecotope's Evan Green designed and coordinated installation of an American made water-to-water heat pump (WWHP) system that has significantly reduced carbon emissions at an Idaho dairy. By simultaneously cooling milk and heating sanitary rinse water, the WWHP system nearly eliminates the dairy's propane usage, which saves the dairy money and substantially reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Ecotope is proving the savings by collecting minute data from site, calculating system efficiency, and displaying it on our EcoDash tool - an Ecotope developed online dashboard used to monitor and troubleshoot emerging technologies. Carbon credits provided Capital funds to install the system, which highlights the importance of legislation that puts monetary value on future carbon saving to support our economy through manufacturing and construction of new, healthy infrastructure (please vote NO on WA initiative I-2117 which would senselessly prevent this type of funding for Washington State in the future!!). Access to capital for decarbonization is critical to growing our economy into 21st century, because the ONLY truly healthy economy for the US is one that prioritizes our stewardship of the natural world and climate. The benefits of a healthy planet will cascade down to a healthier population, equity, and a stronger middle-class economy. Fossil fuels concentrate wealth and damage the planet. CHPWHs going global!
I'm very excited to share that Ecotope will be collaborating on an international research project funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The grant is an "Outstanding Young Scientist Grant" which was awarded to former Ecotope employee Hyunwoo Lim through Konkuk University. We will be extending the research that Ecotope has done on Multifamily Heat Pump Water Heating Systems to help decarbonize buildings in Korea. We will particularly be researching thermal storage potential of these systems and the ability to load shift and to utilize on-site solar power. Through this collaboration we will improve our modeling capabilities to optimize and predict the performance of these systems.

These innovative heat pumps, utilizing natural refrigerants, can efficiently generate 160-180°F water even at low ambient temperatures, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel boilers. In buildings with existing hydronic systems, this technology can replace the boiler, chiller, and water heater, requiring minimal electrical upgrades to achieve full electrification. The name of the project is Decarbonization and Electrification with Advanced Replacement Boilers (DECARB). These heat pumps using natural refrigerants can produce 160-180F water efficiently at low ambient temperatures to replace fossil fuel boilers. In a building with existing hydronic heating and cooling this technology can replace the boiler, chiller, and water heater from the existing chiller electrical service requiring minimal electrical upgrades for full electrification.
