Loving this little tidbit from our Founder, Andrew Olah's recent Founder's Letter in the Kingpins Show newsletter. "I know there are countless methods of calculating or defining “living wages,” which makes determining fair wages very complicated. But for me, living wages should be a human right. That right is not currently in the hands of the factory owners as it was for Ford and Olivetti. Instead, it’s determined by the brands and retailers who only seek to buy at the lowest possible price and once there, start again pushing their supply chain even lower." About us
To all denim mills, laundries, garment factories, trim suppliers, and anyone who supplies products to the denim industry. If any of these problems sound familiar, then the Ethical Denim Council has solutions. We are a resource in cases where fairness is lacking. Reach out to us today and discover how the Ethical Denim Council can be your ally in fostering a more reliable and just business environment and help you with your problems. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ethical Denim Council is a non-profit organization established in 2022 to address the power imbalance and unethical purchasing practices in the denim supply chain. “If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Well, what if it were two trees, or five? Do ten trees make a sound? In the case of the denim industry, how many trees would have to fall before they become impossible to ignore? Check out our new blog post on "The Power of the Collective Voice" and see why Sharmon Lebby believes change is most probable when people come together. https://lnkd.in/gV9YBUk7

This is such an interesting case and we are watching with eyes wide open to see what comes of it. Have you read the brief? Check it out below
Partner and Chair of the Appellate Practice Group at Harris Beach PLLC | Litigator and Legal Strategist | Former Assistant New York State Solicitor General
Think commercial contracting is only about dollars and cents? Depending upon the circumstances, human rights may be at stake, as well. Read the amicus brief that my Harris Beach PLLC colleague Bradley Wanner and I filed today in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (U.S. Courts of Appeals) on behalf of Responsible Contracting Project, John F. Sherman, III, Sarah Dadush, and Olivia Windham Stewart to find out why a well-known retailer may have violated United Nations human rights standards by the hasty manner in which it canceled purchase orders that it had placed with its supplier. #law #humanrights #contracts #contracting #appeals #business #litigation #supplychain #commerce #appellate #appellatelaw #legal #legalissues #washington #washingtonstate #lawyer #lawyers #lawfirms #retail #apparel #apparelindustry #garmentindustry #unitednations #un #courts

Our industry is notorious for behavior that many reasonable folks would consider unethical. The general accepted attitude is that there is nothing truly new under the sun, and therefore we can copy, infringe, and counter source to our hearts content. During Covid Mostafiz Uddin brought the “order cancellation” issue to everyone’s attention. Samples purchased (or obtained free) and redirected to another source for copying is another issue. Andrew Olah we thank you for this great step in forming the Ethical Denim Council.
Our first case at the Ethical Denim Council is completed and you can read about it if you click on the link below. Our second case did not need a result as the brand behaved impeccably and they engaged with our legal teammate and all seems fine. So now I am reaching out to all of you. Do you have cancellations? Do you have claims against importers or brands where you feel you have been mistreated? EDC is here to serve you and our industry to bring to life the reality of commercial compliance. No one in the world can deny that commercial compliance is an obvious “have to have” but putting it into place is not so easy. We are here to help you. Write me if you have a case or an idea or a problem. I'm at your disposal. https://lnkd.in/g99P3Nyb

"We appreciate coverage of the Council’s work, including the decision regarding the Odak finding, which was reached by a panel of three non-industry individuals who graciously donated their time to the hearing and who believe, as we do, that unethical buying practices need to end."
"We understand that Odak is unhappy with the Council’s decision, but we want all mills and sellers to understand that the Ethical Denim Council works for you—and that the organization was founded to end seller mistreatment in our industry. We stand ready to deal with more cases."
