Feeding America

The number of people living in food insecure households in the United States in 2023 increased to 47 million, including nearly 14 million children, according to a report released today by the USDA. This is an increase from 44 million, including 13 million children, from the previous year and the highest rate and number of individuals and children since 2014. In a press release, Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot responded to the new data by saying, "I know we can greatly reduce hunger in America by standing shoulder-to-shoulder with neighbors facing hunger and harnessing our collective power. The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) helps send nutritious food from farmers to food banks across America. This food is critical, but it’s costly for food banks to safely store and distribute. Congress can help. Lawmakers are working on an annual spending bill that will fund critical programs like TEFAP, including support to help food banks with the high costs of storage and distribution. Older adults often have low or fixed incomes, making it hard to juggle the high costs of food and other essentials like housing and medical bills. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) provides seniors with healthy foods through monthly food boxes. Earlier this year, tax legislation passed in the House with broad bipartisan support. The bill included improvements to the Child Tax Credit—a proven tool to help millions more children and families thrive. The expanded Child Tax Credit would offer meaningful help to 16 million children in its first year, lifting as many as 400,000 kids above the poverty line! The Senate plans to vote TODAY on this bipartisan tax legislation. Feeding America urges the Senate to VOTE YES on H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act! ⏳
