About us
The Funders’ Network (TFN) exists to inspire, strengthen and expand funding and philanthropic leadership that yield environmentally sustainable, socially equitable and economically prosperous regions and communities. Our vision is that the Funders’ Network will be the leading resource in philanthropy for interdisciplinary and transformative thinking and action that gives all people the opportunity to live in more environmentally sustainable, socially equitable and economically prosperous regions and communities. TFN believes that collaboration is where real change takes root. When funders decide to act, lead, and advance an agenda together, entire regions and policies can be transformed. We staff funder working groups by providing support to help advance shared learning, develop best practices, create policy agendas, support policy reforms, and improve outcomes on issues and in places. While each issue- or place-based funder working group has its own priority agenda and work plan, the working groups use similar models and tactics for raising funder awareness, building funder knowledge and capacity, and facilitating impact and action. These tools and approaches include: -Funder outreach and education -Convening and networking -Research and analysis -Supporting regional and place-based practice -Pooled funds and investments -Policy reform In addition to the working groups currently staffed by the Network, we also provide strategic support and services to other place-based and regional funder collaboratives, such as the Great Communities Collaborative in the Bay Area, the Central Corridor Funders Collaborative in the Twin Cities, and an emerging Intermountain West Funder Network.

"All travelers deserve to safely and efficiently navigate their communities, yet too often, people with disabilities are prevented from reaching schools, shops, employment, healthcare, places of worship, and other destinations by inaccessible roads and sidewalks. Now, more than 30 years after passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the government must no longer delay taking action" The Funders Network is proud to have joined the National Campaign for Transit Justice and over 100 transit justice organizations across the country in a letter calling on the Department of Justice to adopt the Accessibility Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities in the Public Right-of-Way (PROWAG). In Case You Missed It 🎉 Check out the latest Going PLACES blog from 2024 PLACES fellow Patrick Moreno-Covington of the Rockwell Fund. Patrick reflects on the recent PLACES fellows site visit to Denver, and how place and the stories tied to those places impact our work in philanthropy. Read Patrick's blog below 👇
Philanthropic Strategy Development | Learning and Evaluation Management | Dynamic Community Advocate
What does it mean when the places we hold close carry legacies and current realities of real harm? What do the stories we collectively share about our past mean to those who hear them and what do they reveal about our connection to our communities? Happy to share some thoughts of reflection on these questions following The Funders Network PLACES fellows recent visit to Denver. The Fellowship has been an incredible opportunity to ask big questions and chart new paths forward for philanthropy. Excited (and not emotionally ready) for our final site visit to Sacramento next month. Looking forward to creating a future worth fighting for here in Houston.

The Funders Network reposted this
Last week, our VP of Community Impact and Director of Learning ventured to Billings, Montana, for a meeting of the Philanthropic Preparedness, Resiliency and Emergency Partnership (PPREP). A cohort of Midwestern funders that have responded to significant disasters, PPREP is a program of The Funders Network and connects our community to up-to-date resources and best practices. In Montana, Joe and Carrie visited the Beartooth Mountains, where a 2022 flood event began that impacted areas as far away as Yellowstone National Park. PPREP members heard from city, county, and community foundation staff in these areas about their response and ongoing recovery. The group also explored the history of Indigenous communities and learned about emergency management for reservation communities from the Partnership with Native Americans.

All funders are disaster funders. It's a matter of if, not when 🌊🔥🌪️ 🏔️ TFN's PPREP learning cohort traveled to Montana this week to explore how disaster intersects with housing, climate, economy and community, and how local community organizations are working to meet evolving needs. 🚌 Our journey began with a scenic bus drive along the beautiful Beartooth Highway, where the devastating June 2022 flooding started. 🚧 We traveled to the town of Red Lodge, to learn about ongoing county/municipal recovery efforts and community-based response from Red Lodge Area Community Foundation. We then headed 35 miles northeast to Fromberg, where we heard from the City Council about how the flood impacted their community and the state of accessibility of federal/state resources for rural communities. 🌱 Tuesday, we turned our attention to the unique challenges Native Nations face when disaster strike. Special thanks to Northern Cheyenne Elder Verda King for the opening prayer, and to PPREP member Partnership With Native Americans and the Mountain Plains Regional Native CDFI Coalition for joining us in conversation 🎬 We wrapped up the day with a screening of "Elemental: Reimagining Wildfire", and a delicious dinner from Mama Joan's Frybread and Indian Tacos food truck! 📊 We spent Wednesday morning connecting the dots with Kristin Smith, PhD of Headwaters Economics. Dr. Smith share valuable tools like the rural capacity map and insights on current research informing public policy for working with local governments experiencing disaster. 🙌 A HUGE thank you our local hosts Montana Community Foundation and Taylor Crowl, and to Center for Disaster Philanthropy and Cari (Logan) Cullen for their help making this convening a success! Our PPREP learning cohort focuses on disaster preparation, response and recovery in the Midwest, but those facing the impacts of Hurricane Helene in the Southeast were very much in our thoughts this week.
