The concept of "tipping points" in climate science is a term frequently used to describe nonlinear system responses but often with vague or inconsistent definitions. In this webinar we’ll explore whether a unified, precise definition is necessary and what it should look like. NEXT WEEK: Join experts Vasilis Dakos (Université de Montpellier), Sebastian Bathiany (Technical University of Munich), Robert Kopp (Rutgers University) and Elisabeth Krueger (Universiteit van Amsterdam) for a webinar focused on Climate Tipping Points and Definitions. We will delve into these critical questions and seek to clarify the role of #TippingPoints in #climate science and also public communication and understanding. 11 October, 14:00-15:30 CEST Register: https://bit.ly/3zmHLzt Earth Commission World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Global Systems Institute, University of Exeter

Research. Innovation. Sustainability.
About us
At Future Earth, we believe that research, innovation, and collaboration can transform the world toward sustainability. We harness the experience and reach of thousands of scientists and innovators from across the globe. Together, this global community facilitates research, mobilises networks, sparks innovation, and turns knowledge into action. Our organization is rooted in the work of 27 Global Research Networks. These networks have a long history, in some cases stretching back decades, of generating research at the forefront of sustainability science. They played a critical role in forming the field of Earth system science – which considers how all of the parts of the planet, including human societies, connect to and shape each other. Our Global Research Networks also led in defining the Anthropocene, a new epoch in the geologic history of Earth marked by the influence of humans on the planet. Future Earth builds on this scientific legacy to accelerate transformations to sustainability through research and innovation. We are a major international convenor that fosters a culture of an engaged research based on the co-design and co-production of knowledge and tools. We work to incorporate the latest research findings into government, business and community decisions and policies. The Global Carbon Project’s annual projections of greenhouse gas emissions, for example, have helped to shape the targets of the Paris Agreement on climate change. We experiment in generating new ideas, innovations, and collaborations. In that vein, we are working with tech companies to develop new approaches to reducing carbon emissions. We also foster networks of early career researchers and other innovators, encouraging new ways of thinking about how sustainability research and practice gets done.

This important #sciencepolicy report includes some of the latest science on climate change. It includes input from the Global Carbon Project, a Future Earth Global Research Network. It also highlights the role of #transdisciplinary work in pathways to a sustainable future. 👇
New multi-agency #UnitedinScience report coordinated by WMO is released today: The science is clear. We are far off track from achieving vital climate goals and the gap between aspirations and reality is widening. The impacts of climate change and hazardous weather are reversing development gains and threatening the well-being of people and the planet. But there is hope. New technologies and innovation are potential game-changers and we are better than ever at combining natural and social sciences, traditional knowledge to support #ClimateAction and the #GlobalGoals. The forthcoming UN Summit of the Future offers a choice between breakthrough or breakdown. https://lnkd.in/dBUGGBPs

👏 🏆 The Earth System Governance Project is proud to congratulate Frank Biermann, the founder of our global research alliance, on being awarded the Volvo Environment Prize 2024. This prestigious recognition highlights Frank's transformative contributions to the field of global environmental governance and sustainability science. His unwavering commitment to sustainability and an openness to engaging with diverse views is an inspiration for the kind of community we aim to build. We are deeply honored to celebrate this achievement with him. https://lnkd.in/eBJrjYmq #Congratulations #VolvoEnvironmentPrize
Governments and organizations meet year-round to make crucial decisions to solve global environmental problems. But why is progress so slow? This is the research area of Frank Biermann, research professor of Global Sustainability Governance at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and the winner of Volvo Environment Prize 2024. “We analyzed 3,000 scientific studies on the political effects of the Sustainable Development Goals. We found that, so far, they´ve had no transformative impacts on our societies or the political system, not at the local, national, or global levels. This was a very disappointing finding indeed”, says Biermann. The Jury for the Volvo Environment Prize says in their motivation for the 2024 award: “Frank Biermann has been defining new pathways for international environmental governance in a period of global change. He has spearheaded research that has advanced our understanding of how international institutions might improve our collective ability to mitigate global environmental risks and adapt to unavoidable changes.”
