  • Hi, there! I’m ConstructSean, back for another stop on my tour of Grunley projects with “One-Liners with ConstructSean”. Today, I’m visiting the George Washington Carver Center (GWCC) in Berwyn Heights, Maryland. Originally constructed in 1997, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) named the center for Dr. George Washington Carver, one of the most prominent black scientists of the early 20th century. Carver made great strides in agriculture, creating more than 300 uses for peanuts and even developed products like meat tenderizers, instant coffee, shaving creams and Worcestershire sauce. His contributions to agricultural science significantly impacted the economy and sustainability of farming practices in the United States.   In 2020, GSA selected Grunley to perform the $81.1 million George Washington Carver Center Modernization project. The two-phase, fast-track renovation included roughly 351,805 SF of office space that features a cafeteria, child development center with an outdoor playground, health unit, fitness center, credit union, and installation of a new decorative plaster mural detailing Dr. Carver’s life. The project also included 12 new elevators; new roofing; central mechanical plant upgrades with new chillers, cooling towers, pumps and associated piping; new boilers and air handling units for each of the buildings; and a photovoltaic solar farm at the rear of the complex. Impressively, the project has expanded the building’s occupancy from just 530 to more than 1,900. We hope you enjoyed today’s stop and that you follow along to see where ConstructSean visits next time!

  • It's here! This morning, Grunley was honored and excited to begin the final portion of our recently constructed National World War I Memorial in D.C. – the installation of "A Soldier’s Journey.” Sculpted by Sabin Howard, the 58-foot bas relief sculpture depicts the experience of one American soldier in 38 separate figures. Starting from the left, the soldier takes leave from his wife and daughter, charges into combat, and returns home to his family. Once installation is complete, "A Soldier's Journey" will be the largest freestanding high relief bronze sculpture in the Western Hemisphere!

  • It’s hard to believe that summer is nearly over and we’re already preparing to say goodbye to our interns. As GIE 2024 comes to a close, we’re incredibly proud of the 18 students who joined us for the opportunity to #standout by developing invaluable skills with us that will serve them throughout their careers in the construction field. To commemorate their experience, we asked each intern to share a reflection on what it was like to build #theGRUNLEYway. Thank you to the entire GIE 2024 cohort for joining us this summer! #GIE2024

Happy National Intern Day! At Grunley, we believe that our summer interns are valuable members of the team who bring fresh perspectives and an eagerness to learn that helps us grow as a firm. This year, we welcomed 18 outstanding college students to spend the summer building their future #theGRUNLEYway. We are pleased to offer an immersive internship program that combines invaluable construction experience, supportive mentorship, and long-lasting connections. Throughout the summer, we also invited our interns to join us at various events around the city, including behind-the-scenes tours of our project sites, a hiking excursion, and monuments tour. Tonight, we were honored to have them attend our annual Young Constructors’ Dinner where members of our team under the age of 30 are celebrated and invited to connect with our senior leadership. Thank you to each of our interns for spending your summer with Grunley! #NationalInternDay #GIE2024

  • Enjoy photos from this week's Scenes from the Field featuring our Albemarle Courts Complex Addition and Renovations project in Charlottesville, Virginia. Phase 1 is continuing to make great progress. The structural steel frame erection and placement of concrete at each level is substantially complete, with the connection between the new Annex and the historic Levy Opera House set for late July. Work on the building envelope of the Annex is also progressing well. The Project Team recently achieved a significant milestone by starting the façade masonry installation. Metal roofing installation continues at the Levy House, while TPO roofing at the Annex is just beginning. Inside both structures, the construction of CMU and metal stud partitions is nearly complete throughout, and the installation of MEP in-wall and overhead rough-ins is well underway. Phase 1 of the County Courts Complex Addition and Renovations project includes preserving and renovating the historic Levy Opera House and constructing the new 58,000 SF General District Courthouse. The project is expected to achieve substantial completion in early 2025.
