This is the "why" and the "😥" of Healwise's work. (That emoji is our leadership team thinking through how a little nonprofit with few funds will build the solution where so many other efforts with lots of $$ have fallen short.)
This study used secret shoppers to see how accurate the provider directories at health insurance carriers were, AND how long those inaccuracies stayed very few had no inaccuracies later, but they could only contact 56% of providers of 5170 they tried to even verify this info! The fact that provider directories aren't up to date is the best indication that traditional competitive forces do not apply to healthcare full paper: https://lnkd.in/e_-NNFPz

As an organization, Healwise is committed to building our platform around the needs of the help-seekers we’ve set out to support. Our view: If you want to increase #access to #mentalhealth services for people of color and low-income folks, you first must understand their experiences with seeking support. Young adults at the intersection of these identities have unique needs and challenges when seeking care. Though they have increasing independence, they must often still turn to adults in their lives for guidance and support. With the goal of developing a deeper understanding of young adults and their mental healthcare experiences, last summer, Tali Ball, PhD, Harlee Onovbiona, and Monica Estrada interviewed eight young adults in the Chicago area. Their interviews particularly focused on the challenges young people faced when starting their mental health journeys. How do they search for help? What holds them back? Today, I’m excited to share the results of their work in our new report: “Bridging the Gap: Enhancing Mental Health for Young Adults.” Our hope is that mental health advocates and service providers can use this report’s insights to inform how they serve and support young people of color. Thanks for your support. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth https://lnkd.in/d9RRhb3A

A fun thing that happens when you're building a solution to a big problem is discovering that the big problem comprises smaller and smaller problems that need solutions first, like the world's least adorable set of Russian nesting dolls. One of those problems for us at Healwise is categorization of #mentalhealth supports. What's the difference between group therapy and a support group? If a live workshop is taught by a licensed therapist is this therapy or self-guided support? We need to answer these questions not only for the setup of our database but also to improve mental healthcare literacy about what service options exist, what they offer, and how to evaluate their fit for your particular needs. Case in point: this recent article suggesting that we don't know how to help teens with mental health struggles. The headline is about teens getting "therapy" but the teens in these studies actually got in-class mental health programming focused on DBT or mindfulness skills. This is stretching the definition of "therapy" beyond usefuleness. (And yeah, I'm not surprised that this programming wasn't effective.) I shudder to think what some people may have taken away from that headline. Therapy works for teens. We know this. As we look for ways to increase access to the benefits of therapy, we're going to try a lot of things that don't work. This is not a bad thing. We just have to be very careful about how we communicate these findings. Let's not needlessly fuel hopelessness and #stigma where they're already abundant. https://lnkd.in/eW3G9SbS
