Welcome the Stranger. Protect the Refugee.

About us

There have never been more people seeking safety and so few places willing to protect and welcome them. More than 114 million people are fleeing persecution. Governments should be taking responsibility to support them, but instead, their responses are unacceptable. Founded more than 120 years ago, HIAS is there for refugees when and where they need help most. We are a Jewish humanitarian organization that works in the United States and 20+ other countries, providing vital services to refugees and asylum seekers of all faiths so they can rebuild their lives. With the Jewish community beside us, we also advocate for the rights of forcibly displaced people globally. Over our expansive history, we’ve confronted—and overcome—formidable challenges facing refugees. Today, we are a leader with the expertise, partnerships, and values necessary to respond to the global crisis. Refugees deserve a world in which they find welcome, safety, and opportunity. With you, we can create it. Learn more and take action at HIAS.org.

Refugees and displaced people deserve to rebuild their lives in dignity. That’s the goal behind our first-ever Giving Day: In the wake of so much hateful rhetoric, it's time we show our support for refugees. Next week, on August 29, we will come together as a community to power critical programs, essential services, and advocacy for the rights and well-being of refugees and asylum seekers. Learn how you can make a positive impact for refugees and asylum seekers on Giving Day 👇https://bit.ly/474RG9u

Got books? We do! Staff from our corporate partner Ipsos North America recently organized a book drive and donated over 75 books to refugees and asylum-seekers in the DC area. Employees donated books in diverse languages — from English to Spanish to Dari — and included thoughtful messages of support and welcome. Just one book can be a critical tool to learn, develop skills, and grow creatively. Thank you, Ipsos for your continued support! Reena Roy Tuljaram Deema Abdo

"It's really comforting for us as a family to help people." Since 2018, HIAS has collaborated with Airbnb.org, and its predecessor program, Airbnb Open Homes, to provide emergency accommodation to refugees, asylum seekers and other people in need of a welcoming place to stay. In the last six years, the program has supported close to 60,000 people in Guatemala, the U.S., Ecuador, Poland, Colombia, Peru, and Guyana. In Guatemala, HIAS works with carefully selected hosts to make sure that participants are protected, comfortable and settled into their place. For Airbnb superhost Jorge* and his family, providing his apartment to people in need has brought unexpected benefits to their lives. “We want to help them, and we want them to forget about everything that they’ve gone through for a while. I want my children to grow up and learn about the importance of helping others. They accompany my wife and I in this entire process.” From the beginning of the program until May 2024, 136 people across Guatemala received emergency accommodation thanks to the partnership. https://lnkd.in/g8FtXgnW

Right now is the chance to remind @potus how important resettlement is for communities around the country. The resettlement program in the U.S. is more than just an opportunity — it’s a lifeline. It offers a chance for people who face danger for reasons beyond their control to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity. Here’s what you can do: Urge the Biden administration to commit to resettling at least 135,000 refugees 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJvbE6s2

We're proud to spotlight our ongoing work across Latin America in partnership with HIAS. This work wouldn't be possible without the generosity of Airbnb hosts, who so often go above and beyond to provide a sense of care and connection for refugees and asylum seekers in their communities. For Airbnb Superhost Jorge and his family, providing his apartment to people in need of accommodation has brought unexpected benefits to their lives. “It’s really comforting for us as a family to help people,” he said. “We want to help them, and we want them to forget about everything that they’ve gone through for a while. ICYMI: the "great replacement" and "invasion" conspiracies are being normalized by Congress members, fueling extremist violence and threatening our democracy. We joined leading civil, human, and immigrant rights organizations to release the Bigoted Conspiracy Caucus Report. It reveals the roots and promotion of dangerous white nationalist, anti-immigrant conspiracies within the 118th Congress and their impacts on our democracy. Tomorrow marks five years of the shooting in El Paso. The shooter acted on the white supremacist "great replacement" theory, targeting a "Hispanic invasion." Experts say that when leaders amplify these harmful lies, they create a climate for political violence and threaten our democracy and safety. Our message to officials promoting this rhetoric over 1,250 times: STOP NOW.
