In 2024, HRW filed an amicus curiae brief before the Constitutional Court of Ecuador underscoring the need to uphold international human rights obligations by decriminalizing abortion in Ecuador. The brief was part of the unconstitutionality action brought by the Justa Libertad movement. Ecuador has an obligation to ensure that women, girls and pregnant people have access to safe and legal abortion in order to uphold their human rights.
