Whether traveling by road, sea, or air, navigation systems help determine the exact location of vehicles, but they are prone to errors in bad weather, urban canyons, underground or underwater. Using smartphones’ accelerometers, researchers at the Imperial College London’s Centre for Cold Matter are developing a “quantum compass” that leverages the behavior of subatomic matter to pinpoint an object’s location accurately, regardless of where it is placed.
