The feature article of The Lancet HIV’s November issue shines a spotlight on injectable PrEP coming to Africa, including JSI’s support implementing CAB-LA in #Zambia alongside the Ministry of Health. 💡 We found that integrating CAB-LA with existing HIV prevention options in primary health care settings expands access and choice. Not only are people now using #PrEP for the first time because #CABLA suits their needs, but enrollment in oral PrEP is also higher in JSI-supported sites. Read more about some of the early lessons from CAB-LA implementation: https://lnkd.in/edCkWxY6 #PHC #HIVprevention #GlobalHealth

"Reaching adolescent girls with vaccination and health programs presents unique challenges. Their experiences are often underreported or misunderstood, and many proposed solutions come from actors who may not fully grasp their realities. Girls’ insights into their daily challenges, social pressures, and health needs are invaluable for creating solutions that truly meet their needs," says Brittany Iskarpatyoti, senior gender technical advisor. In response, we’re launching our #HumanCenteredDesign activity in #Nigeria and Indonesia through the HPV Vaccine Acceleration Program Partners Initiative (HAPPI) Consortium to tackle both gender-related and non-gender-related barriers to #HPVimmunization. As Brittany emphasizes, "HPV vaccination programs have the potential to bridge this gap, providing an opportunity for girls to establish a positive relationship with health services" in her recent thought piece. Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/e3Upn_th Stay tuned for the results—we can't wait to share what we discover! #HAPPIConsortium #HPVVaccine #HealthForAll #HPV #GlobalHealth
In a recent article, I posed a challenge to “Imagine a health program designed not just for girls, but by them.” Through the HPV Vaccine Acceleration Program Partners Initiative (HAPPI) Consortium, we're working to do just that. This month and last I've had the immense pleasure of joining colleagues in Nigeria and Indonesia to set up a #HumanCenteredDesign activity aiming to understand, document, and offer solutions to #gender-related and non-gender-related barriers to #HPVimmunization delivery and uptake. In this work, we center the girl in HPV vaccination by directly engaging them and their caregivers to explore challenges and co-create solutions to access and uptake. After a recent workshop in Nigeria, one of our lead facilitators, Temitope Alfred, texted "women and girls are assets, they just need enabling platforms to express themselves." ❤️ A big shout out to our teams from JSI Nigeria, Temitope Alfred, Amenze Eguavoen, Munyaradzi Joel Chinguwa, Eliza Fishman, MPH, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., Empatika Research, and the Nigeria National Primary Health Care Development Agency who have been actively involved in rolling out this work! As the sun rises over the bustling streets of Ruashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (#DRC), community health volunteers like Nathalie and Kathy begin their rounds. With determination and compassion, they move from house to house, ensuring that children in the neighborhood are protected from the devastating effects of vaccine-preventable diseases like #polio. Nathalie has been a trusted figure in Ruashi for over a decade. She’s seen firsthand how something as simple as routine immunization can change lives. When Marie’s youngest son showed signs of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), a condition often linked to polio, it was Nathalie who stepped in. Thanks to her swift actions, Marie’s son received the care he needed and recovered—an outcome that seemed almost miraculous. But it wasn’t a miracle—it was the power of vaccines and the critical work of community health volunteers like Nathalie. As we continue to commemorate World Polio Day, JSI and USAID MOMENTUM Routine Immunization celebrate the lifesaving work of these volunteers. JSI plays a lead role in managing this initiative, helping to build a future where no child has to suffer from preventable diseases. Through strengthened immunization programs, we’ve seen a remarkable 400% increase in AFP case reporting in the DRC from 2022 to 2024, a testament to the power of community-based health systems and the vigilance of health workers. But the fight isn’t over. In 2022, only 66% of children in the DRC were fully vaccinated against polio, leaving many vulnerable. Our collective work must continue to ensure that no child is left behind. Every child vaccinated is a step closer to a polio-free world. Let’s recognize the dedication of unsung heroes like Nathalie and Kathy, who work tirelessly on the front lines to protect children’s futures. Together, we’re building a healthier, safer world—one child, one vaccine at a time. For caregivers Joanito and Daífa in #Mozambique, it takes two hours to travel from their home to the closest health facility. Community health agents have the critical role of raising awareness and generating demand for vaccination services, particularly in rural areas that are far away from a health unit. JSI-led USAID MOMENTUM Routine Immunization supports health agents like Luis to mobilize the community and ensure that caregivers are getting their children vaccinated. 📽️Watch the full video: https://lnkd.in/de7ZdVpn

JSI’s Data Use Partnership (DUP), in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, is reviewing and validating the Alliance for Gender Awareness and Resourcefulness (AGAR)—a new initiative aimed at enhancing the generation and utilization of gender-sensitive health information in health information systems (HIS) and digital health (DH) programs. Mrs. Fatuma Seid, a representative from the Ministry of Health, emphasized that AGAR has the potential to significantly address information disparities related to gender in HIS and DH. Mr. Wubshet Denboba, Project Director at the DUP, noted that AGAR has been developed to implement the gender mainstreaming strategy in HIS and DH. The initiative focuses on building the capacity of women workers within various health programs at the Ministry of Health and regional health bureaus. Through a combination of training and hands-on experience, AGAR aims to cultivate women data champions who are adept at seeking, reviewing, and utilizing data for informed decision-making and actions.
