Learning for all children within a generation.
About us
The Learning Generation Initiative (LGI), formerly the Education Commission, is a global initiative hosted by the Education Development Center, encouraging greater progress on Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education—ensuring inclusive and quality education and promoting lifelong learning for all. Our Vision: All children and youth are in school and learning the skills they need to be successful in work and life Our Mission: To empower the people within and connected to education systems to enable all children to be learning within a generation To achieve our vision and mission, we implement a threefold interactive and iterative approach to change: Analyze - Conduct pragmatic and independent research and analysis to understand barriers to progress and what works, translate it for policymakers, and create tools and knowledge products. Act - Co-design, test, and evaluate innovative solutions with national partners, embed findings, link to opportunities for implementation and ensure sustainability by building local capacity. Amplify - Through our champions, raise the profile of key issues, engage in global fora and collaborate and convene to turn evidence into action To achieve our ambitious agenda, we work across three transformations; Education Workforce, System Delivery and School Health and Nutrition. These transformations are underpinned by a strong focus on addressing marginalization, building systems resistance and facilitating cross sectoral collaboration.

Exciting news: Kenya launches the national chapter of the School Meals coalition, set to reach 10 million children by 2030 🙌 School meals are so much more than "just" food on a plate. School meals are the largest social safety net in the world. They ensure that children stay healthy and nourished, they prevent early school drop out, enable children to learn better throughout the day and even support local economies. To help Kenya reach the ambitious goal of universal school meals coverage for primary school, GPE, the World Food Programme and the School Meals Coalition are launching the School Health and Nutrition Technical Assistance Facility in Kenya. This will not only ensure that children receive nutritious food, it will also enable the priorities of Kenya's education system transformation by helping children to stay in school and learn. #FundEducation #Kenya

🎉 Celebrating World Teacher Day 🎉 Today, we celebrate the vital role teachers play in shaping futures. At The Learning Generation Initiative, through our Education Workforce Initiative (EWI), we’re committed to supporting teachers—especially those working in marginalized communities. Our focus is on: 1️⃣ Strengthening School and System Leadership: We’re working with International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP-UNESCO) to document the potential of middle tier actors to transform teaching and learning and collaborating with government and partners in SierraLeone and Ghana to empower leaders who can drive positive change in schools that ensures improved support for teachers. 2️⃣ Improving Teacher Supply and Quality: In Sierra Leone, we’re working alongside government to address equitable teacher deployment and professional development, while in Uruguay, Cambodia, and the Philippines, we’re piloting initiatives to strengthen the role of teachers in providing personalized learning so that all children get the support they deserve. 3️⃣ Advancing the Learning Team Approach We’re promoting collaboration within and beyond the education workforce, that is centred on the child, and designed to improve teaching and learning outcomes, with ongoing research in partnership with The Open University and documentation of exciting case studies with local researchers in Nepal and Kenya. On this #WorldTeacherDay, we celebrate teachers and reaffirm our commitment to supporting them, and to valuing and elevating their voice across our work. #WorldTeacherDay #SupportTeachers #LearningTeams #FoundationalLearning #EducationForAll What Works Hub for Global Education Building Evidence in Education (BE²) Teacher Task Force STIR Education Regional Education Learning Initiative- RELI Africa Global School Leaders

Continuing our blog series on learning teams, we’re excited to share the latest post by Ng'ang'a Kibandi from Dignitas Project. This blog explores how Kenya's Ustadi Toolkit is transforming the way middle-tier education officials, school leaders, and teachers collaborate, fostering healthier and more effective learning teams. By focusing on key competencies such as virtual management and data-driven support, the toolkit enables these actors to shift from traditional supervisory roles to becoming collaborative partners in driving better teaching and learning outcomes. Read more about the Ustadi Toolkit’s impact and how it nurtures collaborative learning teams.

We're pleased to share some reflections from Amy Bellinger our Director of Programs on the recent What Works Hub for Global Education conference that The Learning Generation Initiative attended last week in Oxford. #WWHGE #EducationResearch #ImplementationScience #Teachers #InclusiveEducation #GlobalEducation
🌍 Reflections from the What Works Hub for Global Education Conference 🌍 As a strategic partner of the What Works Hub for Global Education, The Learning Generation Initiative had the pleasure of attending the inaugural conference Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford last week. It was a gathering of researchers, implementers, and funders, all focused on learning from the implementation of education reform at scale. Here are some of my reflections. What I found exciting: - Implementation Science in Action: It was great to learn more about what implementation science is and see presentations on how approaches like A/B testing and mixed methods can add value to research - Behavioural Science in Education: Sharon Schroen from VVOB gave an excellent presentation that showcased a variety of mixed methods including how lab and field tests were used to explore causal relationships and participatory research that ensures the research is co-designed by government and teachers - Teacher-Centered Approaches: There were many presentations on how to support teachers through structured pedagogy and coaching for example but @Daniel Iddrisu from the REAL Centre emphasized the value of harnessing traditional pedagogy in play-based approaches and engaging communities to support children’s readiness to learn. - Cost-Effectiveness: There was a clear call for more data on cost-effectiveness. Opportunities for further discussion: -Gender and Inclusion: There’s a need to explore how gender and inclusion can be better integrated into implementation science. - Embedding Interventions within Education Systems: More focus is needed on how to sustainably embed effective interventions in education systems at scale - Political Economy & Government Engagement: We need to examine how political economy impacts implementation and a stronger focus on involving governments in research discussions would foster better collaboration and alignment with policy needs. Overall, I learnt a lot, enjoyed speaking to speakers and other delegates and I look forward to seeing how these discussions drive action on foundational learning. #WWHGE #EducationResearch #ImplementationScience #Teachers #InclusiveEducation #GlobalEducation

Melanie Sany, director of Youth Workforce Development and Green Economies at EDC, joined a high-level dialogue on education and development at the African Union Mission to the UN. The discussion with global leaders and partners focused on prioritizing skills development for Africa’s future. As the world shifts towards a green economy, creating pathways into TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) for youth not in education, employment, or training is essential to help them enter the workforce or self-employment.
