Proud to have collaborated with AIA California on continuing education content now available at aecKnowledge. I promise it's interesting! If you're a Berkeley grad, you should be proud of the institution's leadership in disabled rights and the passage of the ADA. Come learn more from me, Ryan Jang AIA, LEED AP, Benjamin Perez, and Caitlyn Clauson about designing for inclusion across abilities. https://lnkd.in/gNytSu6Q

Yesterday, we celebrated the Building Dedication and Ribbon Cutting for The Hub at Sunnydale, a new community center in San Francisco – congratulations to the project team! Watch a video of the event here: https://lnkd.in/g4UevXJT "Mayor London N. Breed joined State Senator Scott Wiener, City officials, and community leaders to celebrate the grand opening of The Hub, a new community center in Sunnydale HOPE SF. The center includes a childcare center operated by Wu Yee Children’s Services, a Boys & Girls Clubhouse, a new recording studio, shared living room and community kitchen, multi-purpose rooms for events and classes, and study and meeting spaces serving residents of Sunnydale, Visitacion Valley, and surrounding communities," writes SF.gov. The recipient of a California Mass Timber Building Competition grant, The Hub features cross laminated timber (CLT) decking floors and roof structure, and glue-laminated columns and beams throughout. Serving as a new gateway into McLaren Park and combined with the adjacent Herz Recreation Center (also designed by LMSA), the project creates a new campus that supports connections to nature and provides a safe, lively, and nurturing environment. For all of you attending the 2024 Monterey Design Conference at Asilomar October 25-27 - it's going to be another wonderful weekend of excellent speakers from around the world and great conversations around the campfire. The Continuing Education sessions on Friday and Saturday will be particularly interesting this year, focusing on the integration of embodied carbon reduction within our evolving concepts of design excellence. There are many worthy sessions to choose from, but I'd like to especially recommend the following (please refer to the MDC program for more info): > Friday 10/25; 9-10AM, Fred Farr Forum: "Design for the Future: Integrating Climate Action and Social Response". Kira Gould, Hon AIA, and Lynn Simon, FAIA, ARUP, will lead an interactive panel discussion on resilient practice. > Friday 10/25; 10:15-11:15AM, Kiln: "Local and Resilient: Bio-Based Building in California", David Arkin, AIA, and Anni Tilt, AIA will discuss making the most with the least. > Friday 10/25; 11:30AM-12:30PM, Fred Farr Forum: "Levers of Decarbonization". AutoDesk Research's David Benjamin will present exciting recent innovations in carbon modeling and more. > Friday 10/25; 12:45-1:45PM, Fred Farr Forum: "Zero Carbon Design: What Really Matters and How to Get There". EHDD's Brad Jacobson, FAIA, will review latest developments in their impressive EPIC tool. > Saturday 10/26; 1:00-2:00PM, Fred Farr Forum: "Regenerative Timber Architecture", Thomas Robinson, founder of award-winning LEVER Architecture, will present their excellent mass timber architecture. LMSA on site checking out the progress of the new #masstimber Mosswood Park Community Center & Park currently underway in Oakland last week! The project will create a vibrant destination for civic, cultural, social, educational, and recreational activities. The Park and Center will be inclusive of a diverse community of users, accessible, flexible in use, and thoughtfully designed. The new building will integrate thoughtfully within the park context; enhancing visibility, security, and connectivity with adjacent uses, while preserving and protecting the verdant, pastoral setting and popular recreation amenities that the park provides. The project creates a “state-of-the art” facility that will foster community, wellness, recreation, and learning. Targeting LEED Gold and Net Zero Ready, the estimated completion is summer 2025. https://lnkd.in/gFJ6A3Hs Architecture / Interiors: LEDDY MAYTUM STACY Architects Landscape Architect: Einwiller Kuehl Community Engagement: Art Is Luv Contractor: JUV Civil: BKF Engineers Structural: IDA Structural Engineers, Inc. Since joining LMSA nearly 20 years ago, Principal Vanna Whitney, AIA has contributed an immense passion for housing under-resourced populations, engaging with diverse user groups, and winning neighbors over through design. This October, Vanna will be stepping down from her role at LMSA to explore new career horizons. We wish Vanna continued success in this next chapter and are extremely grateful for her impactful contributions to LMSA. Her spirit and dedication have profoundly shaped our projects, culture, and populations served. With the firm since 2005, selected projects include: Berkeley Way Apartments & HOPE Center, HomeRise at Mission Bay, Rene Cazenave Apartments, 474 Natoma, and Mission Walk. “One of the important things about design is that it can help pave the way for acceptance by the community and create spaces that support the building of new, strong and healthy communities. You want a building to serve the people who will live in it, and you want it to serve the neighborhood. And if it does both, you've won.” - Vanna Whitney https://lnkd.in/gtV8VxNQ Photos: Bruce Damonte and Tim Griffith
