Please meet our amazing legal intern class for Summer-Fall 2024 -- Nathaniel Dillon, Ling Ling Li, victoire D., and Yanis Lunetta. They have been working hard over the last few months and have played key roles in our legal submission to the UN Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan, developing case studies for atrocity-financing and money laundering typologies, building materials for a seminar series on the Khmer Rouge tribunal, and legal research into forced labor and supply-chain accountability in East Africa and Southeast Asia. LexCollective is committed to building the next generation of lawyers, and we can't wait to work more with Nat, Ling Ling, Victoire, and Yanis in the coming months!

A recent case highlighted by the Forced Criminality Response Working Group, a cross-sector forum facilitated by Freedom Collaborative with support from USAID Cambodia CTIP and Winrock International, demonstrates the effectiveness of swift multi-stakeholder action in tackling cyberscam activities. Working together, members of the group shared information on a scamming case with Singapore law enforcement in time for its officers to protect the victim’s funds and significantly reduce the financial impact of the crime. It’s increasingly evident that the ever deepening crisis of human trafficking for forced criminality in Southeast Asia cannot be tackled with traditional anti-trafficking methods alone, and various stakeholders are now involved in the response. However, in order to trigger investigations, timely and actionable financial intelligence is required, and this case demonstrates the importance of building trust and fostering collaboration among professionals from various fields in order to respond with the necessary urgency. Some exciting progress this week in the French criminal case against BNP Paribas: French financial investigators have found evidence that the bank operated in Sudan "in full knowledge" of the international sanctions, and despite the atrocities in Darfur, in the early 2000s. In March and December 2022, LexCollective and its partner, FIDH - International Federation for Human Rights, successfully assisted Sudanese victims in this case in providing their testimonies to the investigating judges in Paris. This landmark case is the first attempt to hold a financial institution criminally accountable for alleged money laundering and complicity in genocide, crimes against humanity, and torture in Sudan. https://lnkd.in/gcJy3sxT
