Helping military Veterans transition and find a career with purpose in the Medical Technology Industry

About us

MedTechVets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that enables and empowers veterans and transitioning military personnel to find compelling careers in the Life Sciences. MedTechVets serves as a connector between the ecosystems of veterans and the life sciences by helping veterans build their knowledge of the industry and improve their job seeking skills while also enabling companies to reach out to veterans as a resource for employment. The bottom line is that MedTechVets exists to help veterans find jobs and compelling careers in order to lower unemployment and provide talented and dedicated employees to life sciences companies. The organization traces its roots back to 2012 and the medical device industry. Michael Minogue, an Army veteran and CEO of the medical device company Abiomed, started an initiative to bring veterans into the MedTech workforce through skill building workshops that were held in conjunction with Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) meetings and events.

"The ‘unknown’ is a terrifying factor for any transitioning veteran. I spent 9 years on active duty and chose to separate so I could establish a more stable lifestyle for my family, but the transition period is filled with unknown variables that make it hard to plan for. MedTechVets gave me the resources to plan for a life outside the military, and the training to be competitive for the jobs I was looking for." This week, we're featuring fellow Joshua Tallman, MPH. After the training program, Josh was hired as an Emergency Management Consultant at BME Strategies 3 Ways MTV Academy helped Josh prepare for his transition: ✍️ Resources to plan for a life outside the military ✍️ Training to be competitive for the jobs I was looking for ✍️️ Connecting with a broader veteran community What attracted Josh to his current company and role? "Speaking of following your passions… I was attracted to federal employment from my experiences working with State and local governments, as well as my friends and mentors from the veteran community. I was able to lean on my veteran connections (some of whom were from MTV) to understand my future career opportunities with various employers, resulting in my choice to accept a great opportunity with the Federal Government." "In the military we don’t brag and talk about ourselves – humble professionals. In the private sector, it is imperative that you get used to highlighting all of your achievements. Employers want to know what YOU did, not what our teams had done in the past. " This week, we're featuring fellow Shane Callaghan, MBA. After the training program, Shane was hired as an Associate Territory Manager at BD 3 Ways MTV Academy helped Shane prepare for his transition: ✍️ Mentor was very helpful and actively look for job opportunities for me ✍️ Helped me reset and realize what types of roles I really wanted to targe ✍️️ Translated my experiences in a way to companies, so they could see my hiring potential What attracted Shane to his current company and role? "The culture of my new company is what drew me to it. Also, I connected with several veterans within the company before I interviewed. They also have a great veteran’s resource group. The type of role (med device sales) fit my personality the best. I tried targeting marketing and other kinds of roles, but since coming from the military wear it is a people business based off relationships as well, I felt my skillsets translated best to sales. Meet our Mentors! This week we're proud to feature Scott Nelson. "Veterans have so much to offer but often limit their self-promotion which makes entering an entirely new industry very difficult. Our medtech space would benefit so much from these transitioning members that have incredible skills and experience." Scott is the Marketing Strategist for Wound management and Surgical Reconstruction at LifeNet Health What are your key takeaways from being a mentor? "The power of a conversation. I have seen so many positive outcomes that simply came about by directed outreach, and positive follow-through. It’s more than networking, it’s seeing people take such control of their journey and how powerful that mindset truly is."
