National Patient Safety Board Advocacy Coalition
Hospitals and Health Care
It is time to establish a National Patient Safety Board to reduce medical errors & save lives.
About us
A proposed independent federal agency, the National Patient Safety Board (NPSB), would model the efforts of the NTSB and CAST within health care. The NPSB would complement existing agencies in monitoring and anticipating patient safety events with artificial intelligence, provide expertise to study the causes of errors, create recommendations and solutions to prevent future harms, and leverage existing systems to bring key learnings into practice. The NPSB would guarantee a data-driven, scalable approach to preventing and reducing patient safety events in healthcare settings—and will save lives. Legislation that would establish a National Patient Safety Board was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022. Now is the time to establish a National Patient Safety Board.

Becker's Healthcare highlights the key takeaways from the 9/17 White House #patientsafety forum. It's exciting to see greater collaboration among federal agencies, efforts by 22 organizations to promote a "whole-of-society approach" to healthcare safety, and commitments from 16 health systems to improve safety. These are great first steps toward eliminating harms in health care, but making care safer for patients and providers will require so much more. Let's get all healthcare systems to commit to making safety their top priority. Patients, families, and the healthcare workforce deserve nothing less. https://hubs.li/Q02QrQ-N0 Ascension Baylor Scott & White Health Beth Israel Lahey Health Braden Health CommonSpirit Health Highmark Health MedStar Health Mercy Health Nemours Novant Health Prisma Health Sanford Health SSM Health Trinity Health University of California Health (Oakland, Calif.)
