A COP of connections. That’s how my colleague Ana Carolina González Espinosa described COP16 – and it resonates so much. Over the course of a busy two weeks, my colleagues were building connections between supporting biodiversity and the responsible scale up of transition minerals. Between the just fossil fuel phaseout and ecosystem restoration and reparations for environmental and community impacts. Between protecting nature and fighting mineral sector corruption. Between partners spanning climate action, resource governance, environmental and human rights defenders. Between ministries of environment, energy, finance and natural resources. Between the work of the UN Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, COP16 and looking ahead to COP29 and COP30. And of course, between our own colleagues from Ghana, the DRC, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the US. As the world shifts toward a low-carbon future, shaping African perspectives on sustainable energy transition financing is crucial for the continent’s fossil fuel and mineral producers. Launched at #COP16, Colombia’s proposal for new framework for traceable and transparent mining is a significant milestone, placing producing countries at the forefront to address critical economic, social, and environmental challenges. It also demands global accountability. As highlighted by NRGI’s Suneeta Kaimal, the agreement presents a unique opportunity to ensure that climate action translates into tangible benefits for communities while preserving our environment and biodiversity. A holistic and multi-stakeholder approach will be vital in designing this framework, ensuring that it meets the needs of those most affected by the mining sector.
