We had a great time last week attending S&P Global's CERAWeek, thanks again Paul Markwell for the invite. Here are our main learnings from the discussions we had last week: 📈 Conducting frequent surveys for super & ultra emitters is important to reduce error bars of emission totals and detect the fat-tails in methane inventories ⏳ With the introduction of the EPA super-emitter programme and increasing emphasis on reductions, there is a strong need for operators to receive methane detections from providers as real-time as possible 🛰 Additionally to detecting emissions, it is becoming more and more important to also detect when there were NO emissions detectable above a certain threshold Beyond this it was great to meet and reconnect with a variety of policymakers, practitioners and operators at the conference, and hear about some the really exciting work going on in the field. It was great meeting Peter Roos, Brian Redick, Arsineh Hecobian, TJ Conway, Melinda Truskowski, Alicia Smith, Matt Kolesar, Warwick King, Ben Silton, Juli Oliver, Matthew Babin, Sacha Abinader, Loan Tran, Philipp David, Trey Shaffer, Jessica Shumlich, Curtis Hughes, Spencer Cox, Kevin Birn, Kahina Abdeli-Galinier, Kristin Fejerskov Kragseth, Bob Dudley, Heather Jones, Emmanuel Corral, James Stock

Accelerating the low-carbon transition with actionable methane intelligence
About us
Methane emissions from the oil & gas industry is the lowest hanging fruit in climate change mitigation. Orbio tracks global methane emissions from the oil & gas industry with satellite imagery. We sell the data to financial & energy companies that want to reduce methane emission risks in a cost-effective way.

Did you hear? We recently welcomed Sonangol E.P., Santos Ltd and Orbio Earth (YC S23) to Aiming for Zero this quarter. With around 100 other companies, the collective aim for this initiative is to encourage the oil and gas industry to reduce methane emissions to near zero by 2030. Earlier this week, we ran our first working session at #CERAWeek, with some great conversation and knowledge sharing on rethinking how we approach methane emissions. Congratulations to Jack Angela and Orbio Earth (YC S23) in securing this round of capital! Very timely and topical. Best of luck in the journey ahead!
We’re excited to announce that Orbio Earth (YC S23) have successfully closed a $4m seed round to accelerate its methane reduction journey! We were lucky to have Initialized Capital, Y Combinator, European Space Agency - ESA and Collaborative Fund participating in the round. They were joined by an amazing group of individuals including JJ Fliegelman, David Rusenko and Liz Wessel. To learn more, check out the coverage in TechCrunch: https://lnkd.in/ey8RruhJ If you missed it here is also a link to our feature in the 2024 International Energy Agency (IEA)'s Methane Tracker: https://lnkd.in/gQVyFdEy With this funding, we are actively on the lookout for additional financial and oil & gas companies that want to understand their methane emission risk exposure. We have been very fortunate to have a great mix of individuals propel and support us to this milestone. Thanks again for all your support (in no particular order!): Zani Mouton, William Kingwill, Thomas Edwards, Partha Bose, Maxime Rischard, Vikram Singh, Diehl Sillers, Mahrukh Niazi, Ferdinand Mütsch, Wojciech Adamczyk, Pavel Filippov, Gustaf Alströmer 🇺🇦, Wayne Crosby, Jared Friedman, Tom Blomfield, Kim-Mai Cutler, Zoe Perret, Daniel Sherman, Romain Diaz, Anil Maguru, Alexandre Perry, Matilda Barrowcliff, Etienne Corminboeuf, Júlia Pap, Satish Kumar, Maike Nowatzki

Congratulations to Jack Angela, Robert Huppertz and the entire team at Orbio Earth (YC S23) on closing their seed round and being featured as part of IEAs 2024 Methane Tracker! We could not be more excited to support the company in mitigating emission and leakage risk for oil & gas assets globally by providing frequent and global data. Methane is much shorter-lived than carbon dioxide, but has nearly 30X the heat trapping potential -- making it a very urgent and critical piece to solve as part of the larger climate change puzzle. Orbio Earth (YC S23) has raised $4 million in seed funding to find methane leaks that could cost oil companies billions this year. While we tend to focus on carbon dioxide (CO2)— responsible for most global warming— methane has driven ~30% of climate change. Methane poses a large enough threat that the U.S. is set to impose fines on its emission - starting at $900 per metric ton in 2023, escalating to $1,500 by 2026. As the main component of natural gas, methane is far more potent than CO2, causing 83 times more warming. Despite its impact, detecting methane leaks has been difficult. The U.S. alone has more than 4 million active and inactive oil and gas wells, and with the EPA's new rules incentivizing leak prevention, companies face potential fines in the billions in just a couple of years. Founded by Robert Huppertz and Jack Angela, Orbio has built a technology that can for the first time use satellite images to track methane from every single oil & gas facility on the planet, replacing emission factors and allowing finance companies to make the best bets on oil & gas companies that will withstand a wide avalanche of incoming regulation. Congrats to the team on the round!

We’re thrilled to support the analysis for the International Energy Agency (IEA) Methane Tracker 2024. Being the thought-leadership piece on methane in the energy sector, the tracker shows latest trends of emissions and policy. Some Insights from the report: 💨 40% of 2023 methane emissions could have been prevented at no net cost. 🤝 Implementing current pledges (incl. COP28 commitments) could lead to significant reductions in emissions 🛰 Satellite analysis with Sentinel-2 reveals a significant amount of super-emitter emissions across the US Satellites are not a silver bullet in understanding the entire methane problem, but with increasing technological advancement and global-scale analysis of instruments like Sentinel-2 today, Environmental Defense Fund's MethaneSAT in 2025, and Carbon Mapper, we aim to fill an important gap in global-scale, site-level, high-frequency methane monitoring.
