For me, Pride is not just a time to celebrate, but it’s a time a reflect—I’ve often said it’s like New Year’s for the LGBTQ+ community. What’s happened in the last year, and what do we need to do in the year to come. And this Pride I’ve been reflecting a lot on one of my mentors, the incomparable Larry Kramer, and what he’d say to me about the world today. I only knew Larry for the last ten years of his life, but in that short time, I learned so much from him. You’d think that given how different our styles of activism are (he favored “die-ins” in the #nyc streets and covering Jesse Helm’s entire house with an inflatable condom, and I try to get CEOs and companies to use economic power to drive change), that we wouldn’t see eye to eye on much. But instead, he helped me understand that creating social change requires activists of all stripes and approaches, from loud protestors on the outside to strategic advocates on the inside. And to prove it, he agreed to speak at my @outleadership #OutNEXT emerging leader conference (the LAST place you’d assume to find Larry Kramer was on an investment bank’s stage surrounded by 220 young corporate leaders). And I’ll be forever grateful that he agreed, because those next gen #LGBTQ leaders got to hear from a Legend. I asked my buddy Kate Kendall to interview him, and the one question I asked her to ask him was, “Does it bother you that the vast majority of these young leaders may not know who you are and what you did for them?” And Larry had the most poignant (and Larry-like) answer. He said, “Todd, we fought for our health and our community so that they could just live their lives. The greatest gift that our generation can give to them is to not pass along our trauma, and to absorb it for them.” Larry died just ten months later. Our community owes leaders like Larry (and Urvashi Vaid, Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson, and countless others who are no longer with us) an enormous debt of gratitude for the world we now inhabit. And what would Larry say to me today? “Stop wasting time writing social media posts, you’ve got work to do!” I can literally hear him. And as usual, he’s right. #Pride #moreworktodo Out Leadership

🏳️🌈 10 Reasons why I’m celebrating Gay Pride this June 🏳️🌈 : 1. Authenticity matters, taking Pride in who you are impacts your mental health positively. According to The Trevor Project 41% of LGBTQ+ Youth Considered Suicide in the past year. 2. Being Out is an act of bravery - I want the next generation of LGBTQ+ youth to see the community thriving not just surviving. Did you know the first CEO of a Trillion dollar company was a gay man, Tim Cook Apple? 3. According to Out Leadership's Business Climate Index, conversion therapy remains legal in 36 states - For as long as others believe someone chooses their sexuality I’ll stand loudly to say “God made me this way” whether you like it or not. 4. I am Proud of who I am and the family my husband and I have created. Married 14 years (Boston, MA 2010) with a 7 year old son. 💒 5. I celebrate Pride because I understand that my spirituality and sexuality can co-exist. ⛪ 6. We need Pride because the state I live in banned “The Family Book” by Todd Parr due to the true line: “some families have two moms or two dads.” Facts matter. 📖 7. I survived the attack on the WTC on 9/11 and vowed to live fully from then on. ❤️ 8. No competent & secure professional I’ve encountered has ever been threatened by the knowledge I’m a gay man. True Allies are everything and everywhere. 💪 9. We should celebrate that nearly one quarter of Fortune1000 Companies have LGBTQ+ inclusive board diversity policies that are driving superior revenue performance. We should continue to strive to make that 100%. It makes solid business sense to be inclusive. 💰 10. Pride and education can peacefully challenge ignorance. ☮ You can be two things in this world.  Three even…Four (keep going). You can succeed and you can fail.  You can be right and wrong.  Religious or Atheist  Democrat or Republican Gay, Straight, Bi, Trans, Queer, Questioning or Asexual (it’s none of my business). You can be a husband, father, professional, spiritual, supportive, homosexual and an athlete (I played Football @DonBosco), Anything! Be Happy. Be YOU. Be Proud. Thank an Ally. 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 #ThankanAlly #gaypride #gays_with_kids #OutLeadership #TheTrevorProject #DonovanKidd #allyup #911survivor #donboscoprep #villanova

Yesterday was a special day. In a time when the rights of my community are being systematically erased, and Pride flags are being banned (and even burned), having the Vice President of the United States open her Residence to #LGBTQ leaders from across the entire country mattered more than ever before. Yesterday was also the 8th anniversary of the horrific Pulse nightclub shooting, which took 49 innocent lives. But as my friend Billy Porter said in his remarks (before taking us to church with his epic song “Audacity”), we’ve been here before. Those who hate us and try to intimidate us with fear, will never win. Because our community has always had to fight for our right to exist, and to live openly with the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution…and while we may suffer setbacks (1,100 anti-LGBTQ bills in the last 18 months and counting..), we will always prevail. Turns out, Love Always Wins. I think Vice President Harris said it best, when she reminded us that whether in the AIDS crisis, or in our fight for marriage equality (my buddy Jim Obergefell was there yesterday as well!), the LGBTQ community always finds (and never forgets) JOY. And to me, that is what Pride is all about. Taking stock of our progress, coming together as a community to recharge ourselves for the fight ahead, and most importantly to CELEBRATE and bring JOY—and to have a little (or a lot of) fun! Thank you Madame Vice President for having our back for decades (she performed her first same-sex marriage twenty years ago—and famously refused to defend Proposition 8 when she was AG). And thank you to ALL the Allies of the LGBTQ community who have stood with us for so long. This Pride month, please make yourselves even more visible. We need you more than ever. Happy Pride! #pride Out Leadership #HRC Gautam Raghavan Rufus Gifford Jim Obergefell Jessica Stern Kelley Robinson #JonathanVanNess #AnthonyRapp #AdmiralRachelLevine #BillyPorter

🚨 ALERT 🚨 LGBTQ+ RIGHTS IN THE UNITED STATES IN ALARMING DECLINE. For the second year in a row, the average state score on the Out Leadership State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index has dropped. For the third year running, more states in the union have become more unfriendly to the LGBTQ+ community. States are becoming increasingly polarized. While a handful of states have become ever-stronger safe havens for equality, in many states the situation is deteriorating. 6th Annual State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index 2024 Out Leadership’s 2024 State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index, which measures every US state across 22 data points to create a business-lens roadmap of LGBTQ+ equality in the nation, will highlight trends in politics and culture that affect LGBTQ+ Americans and business operations nationwide. Six years ago, Out Leadership launched its first State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index in the US. This index provides leaders with a roadmap to better understand the many challenges still facing LGBTQ+ Americans. In 2024 alone, over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ laws were introduced nationwide. As we enter an election year, the political and cultural environment in the United States has become increasingly polarized with LGBTQ+-friendly states becoming increasingly inclusive while the worst states for equality become evermore hostile to equality and freedom.

For the last six years, gay advocacy group Out Leadership has produced an index gauging the business climate for gay and transgender people state by state, mapping out where they can live and work with the least discrimination and hardship. Last year as anti-LGBTQ+ bills swarmed statehouses across the country, the average score for all 50 states dropped for the first time. And the average score fell again in 2024. The largest decreases were driven by rising anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and state legislation restricting gay rights including so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bills in Florida, Indiana, Kansas and North Carolina, said Todd Sears, who shared the results exclusively with USA TODAY. Today, to kick off 2024 Pride Month, Out Leadership launched the 6th Annual #LGBTQ State Business Climate Index, with our partner USA TODAY (on the cover of the Money/Business section!). As you may imagine, thanks to the efforts of anti-business, anti-science fear mongering by right wing legislatures (and Governors) across the country, which have resulted in over 1,000 anti-LGBTQ bills over the last 18 months—the overall score for the entire United States went DOWN for a SECOND year in a row, by 1.16%! Criminalizing #LGBTQ lives (and livelihoods) doesn’t protect our youth, it hurts them and their families. Leaders in these states need to ask themselves: How is making it harder for companies to attract and retain talent good for a state’s economy? It isn’t. There are direct economic (and of course, human) consequences to discrimination. I hope everyone checks out the 2024 Out Leadership Index, as well as all 50 CEO Business Briefs that we’ve built to explain it—and what we want leaders to DO here: https://lnkd.in/e-Zt5Ku6 Kudos to New York State for being the TOP state in the US for a 4th year in a row, and to Michigan for being jumping the most in this year’s Index (thanks to making the discredited practice of conversion therapy illegal, among other progress). Please share with your networks, your companies and your elected officials. #pride2024 #returnonequality
