Today, Oxfam has submitted a formal communication with the UN regarding systematic human rights violations Amazon and Walmart have committed against their U.S based workforces. Amazon and Walmart have normalized abusive behavior in their warehouses and stores, with labor practices intended to maximize profits at the expense of worker health and safety. The mega-corporations’ excessive surveillance technology, union busting, and grossly inadequate wages inflict harm on their workforces and contribute to deepening economic inequalities. As the two largest private employers in the U.S., Amazon and Walmart should set high standards for treating workers with dignity and respect, and yet they continually fail to do so. We hope that escalating this issue to the UN level will lead to the prioritization of worker well-being, not only profit.

Is America becoming an oligarchy today? I was asked this question by (none other than!) Joy-Ann Reid - MSNBC host and national commentator - at the Democracy Summit 2024 in the U.S., led by (none other than) Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer-Prize winning author of the 1619 Project. Here's my answer. I later spoke on how the weapon of choice of oligarchy is racism and sexism. Such a privilege to be part of this, for Oxfam America and for me. The summit at Howard University's Center for Journalism and Democracy welcomed leading journalists from across the country to discuss oligarchy, with deep-dives on issues from Supreme Court integrity to the school choice movement and big tech's erosion of democracy. The inspiring summit welcomed speakers including Sherrilyn Ifill (formerly President of NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.), Tonya Mosley (NPR), Errin Haines (The 19th), Andrea Bernstein (who I was proud to be on the panel with), Josh Cowen, Jane Chung, Ciara Torres-Spelliscy, Jeffrey Winters, Justin Elliott and more awesome folks. Appreciation to Kali-Ahset Amen, PhD and her awesome team. The full event here: https://lnkd.in/g5DAAQ_H. Another Amazon Prime Day is here but while deals are on the rise so are worker injuries.... Amazon’s excessive surveillance of their warehouse workers has created environments where workers are pressured to keep up with inhuman, unsustainable production standards resulting in injury and a workplace culture of intimidation. Help advocate for warehouse workers with us: oxf.am/StopSurveillance

"I say to you, colonialism is not yet dead." An UNGA to remember. A real honor for Oxfam. To convene and to disrupt. We co-hosted a groundbreaking convening with the Ford Foundation on "Multilateralism in the Era of Global Oligarchy" - that was joined by none other than the foreign minister of South Africa Ronald Lamola, the Washington Post's Karen Attiah, pioneering advocate Nanjala Nyabola and Oxfam International's Amitabh Behar. This wasn't your average UNGA event. *And* we launched an international paper on "Multilateralism in the Era of Global Oligarchy" - that made the news across the world. And even found its way into the speeches of world leaders, such as the President of Colombia. The focus: the massive but understated role that extreme inequality - and the ultra-rich and powerful corporations - are playing in undermining multilateralism. With new data and examples. Please do have a read (link below). I post here my opening words to our event - a total privilege personally for me. In which I quote Bandung in 1955, and reflect on where we are today in 2024. But more importantly do check out the entire event (link below). Today, 1 year after Hamas’s horrific attacks & the launch of Israel’s devastating assault in Gaza, we mourn all the civilians killed – Palestinian & Israeli. We call for the release of all remaining Israeli hostages & illegally detained Palestinians. We need a #CeasefireNOW.

"The world has become numb to their suffering, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We must hold onto the common humanity of both Palestinians and Israelis." Oxfam America's President and CEO Abby Maxman's reflections on the 41,000 Palestinians killed under Israeli siege and bombardment, and the Israelis lost on October 7th and in captivity. We must continue to push for peace. Time is running out for Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages. The best way to secure peace and dignity for all is a ceasefire, the safe return of hostages, and an end to the occupation. Together, we must turn our outrage into action for peace.

Almost a year ago, Hamas’ brutal attacks on the dark day of October 7 left all of us in horror. The unspeakable violence that Israel has unleashed in Gaza since that day has escalated the conflict into a dire humanitarian crisis. Right now, nowhere in Gaza is safe. Israel’s military campaign has displaced 2 million Palestinians and every 3 hours Israeli explosive weapons hit civilian infrastructure-including schools, hospitals and aid distribution. We cannot allow the relentless suffering to continue. One year later, our demands are only more urgent. We demand a full and permanent ceasefire now for Gaza and Lebanon, the safe return of all Israeli hostages and illegally detained Palestinians, an end to Israel’s siege of Gaza, and a stop to lethal arms sales to Israel. Take action with us: https://lnkd.in/gQeqjKMd

"The world has let itself become numb to their suffering and to disregard their humanity. But it simply does not have to be this way" Reflecting on this year we mourn more than 41,000 Palestinians who’ve been killed under Israeli siege and bombardment and the Israelis lost on the dark day of October 7 and during their captivity in Gaza.
