The practice of offering comfort and support to those in mourning is an important tradition in Jewish culture, rooted in the belief that together, we can bear the heavy weight of grief. Since October 7, 2023, students involved with our grantee, Hillel International, have organized efforts across college campuses to create safe spaces for mourning, promote open dialogue and provide avenues for collective action. We are proud to witness these students embody these Jewish values and honor this incredibly difficult moment in community with each other. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3UfiWNh.

Working to achieve more just and inclusive societies
About us
At Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, formerly Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, we partner with our grantees in the United States and Israel to pursue more just and inclusive societies. In the U.S., we aim to advance racial, gender and economic equity through investments in criminal justice, democracy and voting rights, K-12 public education, gender and reproductive equity and the family’s hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. We also invest in fostering a more joyful and diverse Jewish community. In Israel, we work toward a secure homeland for the Jewish people, a thriving democracy and an inclusive society that cares for its most vulnerable. Charles and Lynn Schusterman established the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation in 1987 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2021, we updated our name to Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies to reflect the full range of the Schusterman family’s philanthropic and advocacy work. Under the leadership of Stacy Schusterman, we invest in leaders, organizations and U.S. public policy to drive long-term systemic change. Our team works with grantees, experts, civic institutions and governments to create pathways to greater equity and inclusion. Our work is inspired by our founders’ commitment to pursue justice, repair the world and ensure all people are treated with dignity and respect. Our team members bring a wide range of professional expertise, cultural backgrounds, lived experiences and perspectives to our work. Thank you Liz Schrayer of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) and OLAM Board member Lisa Eisen of Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies for your powerful words, at our recent event in Washington, DC to commemorate #October7 and reflect on its impact on our field. Some 3 dozen OLAM partners, members, and Jewish international development practitioners took part in the event, where new connections were made and we tackled issues such as staying steadfast in our global commitments while navigating the complexities of being Jewish in the field in these challenging times. If you know a Jewish individual working in the global development or humanitarian aid field who would benefit from joining our supportive community, tag them below!

Gun violence is not just a criminal justice issue; it is a preventable public health issue. This past summer, the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on Firearm Violence reaffirmed what many of our grantees have long advocated: ➡️ By identifying potential risks, intervening early and strengthening support systems—as we do for other public health issues—we can more effectively address #gunviolence. Learn from the leaders advancing this critical work in a new video series by The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention, featuring Joseph Griffin, DrPH of Youth ALIVE! and more: https://bit.ly/40nBFtR.

The pandemic set student learning back, but a 200-day school year is helping these students catch up. 💡 In Richmond, where the majority of #publicschool students live below the poverty line, adding 20 extra days to the school year has been critical in addressing COVID-19 #learningloss. Discover how our grantee, Richmond Public Schools, is expanding this transformative initiative in the 2024-25 school year. https://bit.ly/48qDHvd

“They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds.” This powerful quote is featured on a new mural traveling through our founders’ hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In partnership with local organizations dedicated to LGBTQ youth services including our grantees, Prism Project and Youth Services of Tulsa, LGBTQ community members came together to paint the mural and create booklets filled with handwritten letters of support. This #LGBTQHistoryMonth, their project spreads messages of hope, affirmation and remembrance throughout the city while honoring the community’s long legacy of activism and resilience in the face of adversity. Young people, seniors, caregivers, care recipients and voters across the aisle all agree: #carework is essential to a thriving economy and society. Decades of grassroots organizing have brought us to a pivotal moment where policy change feels possible. How can funders ensure this change becomes reality? Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, alongside the Ford Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation and many others have adopted a collaborative approach to ensure that organizations leading the movement have the support necessary to continue building momentum. Gun violence is a pressing #publichealth issue that demands our attention—and action. 🎥 Over the next month, our grantee, The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention, is partnering with leaders from healthcare, research and government in a video series exploring strategies to address #gunviolence following the Surgeon General’s Advisory on Firearm Violence this past summer. These important conversations are happening now on their social platforms. Start here. ⤵️
The U.S. Surgeon General recently released an Advisory on firearm violence as a public health crisis. What does this mean, and why does it matter? Find out from researchers, community leaders, and those on the frontlines of violence prevention in a new video series from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education. First up: Jonathan Jay, DrPH, JD, assistant professor at Boston University School of Public Health, who explains, “People who have themselves been harmed are more likely to cause harm in the future. And criminalization alone does not work to interrupt those cycles.” What works? Health-focused solutions.
