A global initiative relentless in our pursuit of achieving a complete map of the ocean floor by 2030.
About us
The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project is a pioneering initiative accelerating ocean mapping efforts. We are a global community working with partners across industry, governments, research, philanthropy, NGOs, and civil society to achieve a complete map of the entire seabed by 2030. Seabed 2030 is a flagship programme of the United Nation’s Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

We're delighted to announce Seabed 2030's newest partner - Geoscience Australia 🇦🇺 The partnership between the Australian Government's geoscientific research organisation and Seabed 2030 was formalised during a signing ceremony at Geoscience Australia’s headquarters in Canberra. Through their innovative AusSeabed initiative, Geoscience Australia will contribute crucial bathymetric data from across their region, significantly enhancing our understanding of the ocean floor. 💬 As our Director Jamie McMichael-Phillips puts it: “This partnership underscores the power of collaboration across national and regional boundaries, drawing on Australia’s breadth of seabed data and expertise." #Seabed2030 #Collaboration #SeabedMapping #Hydrospatial

📡 Our partners Exail and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration alongside the University of New Hampshire are over half-way through an exciting month-long mission to gather seafloor mapping data from a shore-based operations center. The project is putting two NOAA-owned DriX uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs) to the test. The aim is to assess the efficiency of operating multiple USVs remotely for marine science missions. 💡 We look forward to seeing what seabed data the USVs’ multibeam sonars gather and what conclusions the teams draw. The International SeaKeepers Society expands into the South Pacific 🇳🇿 In 2023 SeaKeepers established its South Pacific chapter in New Zealand to tackle critical marine challenges, including coral reef degradation, pollution, and to promote next generation learning 🪸 Since then, the non-profit has made remarkable strides, launching the first floating classroom to educate on marine conservation with BLAKE, and leading pioneering Manta Ray Surveys with Manta Watch New Zealand to protect these incredible species. 🙌 The Pacific Ocean Regional Center of Seabed 2030 is excited to see their progress as they continue to drive scientist-led expeditions, promote citizen science, and engage local communities. #SeaKeepers #SKSouthPacific #OceanConservation #MarineScience #CitizenScience #Seabed2030 #Hydrospatial

🇳🇿 NIWA is home to our South and West Pacific regional center, so we’re thrilled that they’re sponsoring the 6th Annual Pacific Ocean Mapping Meeting this November. From the base in Wellington, our regional team manages an area equivalent to a quarter of the world’s oceans. That includes: ✔️ The Pacific Ocean from South America to Australia ✔️ Western part of the Northern Pacific Ocean to Japan ✔️ Exclusive Economic Zone of 39 countries and territories ✔️ 2 of the world’s deepest trenches 🌊 NIWA’s unWAVEring support is key to our mission to advance marine research efforts in the region and better understand marine ecosystems in line with the UN’s sustainable development goals. Seabed 2030 reposted this
In 2017, The Nippon Foundation and GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans launched the Seabed 2030 Project to address the urgent need to map our oceans. At the time, only 6% of the seafloor had been adequately mapped, leaving huge gaps in our ability to manage marine resources sustainably and protect coastal communities. Seabed 2030 aims to change this by compiling all available seabed mapping data into a comprehensive digital map of the world’s ocean floor by 2030, supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 14. As Kevin Mackay explains, this initiative is critical for the future of our oceans. 🚢 Our head of partnerships Stephen Hall had an inspiring visit to RRS James Cook while she was visiting Cardiff at the weekend, with an opportunity to tour the vessel and thank our National Oceanography Centre partners in person for their outstanding contribution to Seabed 2030 and ocean mapping 👏 The highlight: Getting up close with one of their Autosub LRs (aka: ‘Boaty McBoatface’). These incredible submersibles are key in helping us unlock the mysteries of our ocean floor. Would you like to join our community?
