A global initiative relentless in our pursuit of achieving a complete map of the ocean floor by 2030.

About us

The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project is a pioneering initiative accelerating ocean mapping efforts. We are a global community working with partners across industry, governments, research, philanthropy, NGOs, and civil society to achieve a complete map of the entire seabed by 2030. Seabed 2030 is a flagship programme of the United Nation’s Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

New resource: The Nippon Foundation - GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans Seabed 2030 Project, an endorsed #OceanDecade programme, has published, in partnership with NLA International - Blue Economy Solutions, a series of seabed mapping use cases. This comprehensive compendium showcases the indispensable role of seabed mapping in addressing some of the world’s most pressing marine and maritime challenges. The use cases aim to address global issues such as climate change mitigation, marine biodiversity protection, and blue economy development. They also ensure that seabed mapping efforts are targeted to support ocean sustainability, policy development, and economic growth. 👉 Download them here: https://ow.ly/L5PB50THB7y

We are pleased to share the successful conclusion of the Madagascar Stakeholder workshop as part of the WIOBathy project, held recently in Antananarivo, Madagascar. 🇲🇬 This collaborative effort, co-led by the Foibe Taotsarin-tanin’i Madagasikara (FTM) - Madagascar's National Geographic and Hydrographic Institute - together with the WIOBathy project brought together key local stakeholders to focus on the collation of bathymetric data and the development of local technical capacity. WIOBathy is an initiative led by alumni of the The Nippon Foundation/GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans Training Program from the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Region, which aims to produce the first authoritative bathymetric map of the WIO, with data being contributed to Seabed 2030.  Through capacity-building initiatives and local collaboration, Madagascar is positioning itself as a significant contributor to both regional and global ocean mapping efforts. 🗾 🌊 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/du_Qshat #OceanMapping #MarineScience #Bathymetry #Madagascar #GEBCO #Hydrospatial

💡 We focus a lot on the innovative technological tools that are used to map deep sea ecosystems. But scientists in Southern Australia have a found a different way to capture data from marine habitats around the area's continental shelf. 🦭Researchers fit lightweight video cameras and trackers on eight sea lions, hoping to fill in mapping gaps. As a result, they were able to map and predict seabed habitats across over 5,000 sqm of previously unexplored seafloor. Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dU96bcx7 #MarineScience #Mappping #Hydrospatial

🇮🇹 The Risorsa Mare International Forum proved to be fruitful, with insightful discussions and promising networking opportunities. This year’s event was opened by Italy’s Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies, Nello Musumeci. Seabed 2030 director Jamie McMichael-Phillips also presented Mr Musumeci with a Seabed 2030 coin to commemorate his efforts in expanding knowledge of the deep sea. 🎤 During his own presentation, Energizing Ocean Floor Mapping, Jamie spoke about the results of seabed mapping benefits analysis, alignment with Ocean Decade challenges, and the project’s strategic network of global partners who are driving progress. We look forward to attending again next year. #MaritimeIndustry #Policy #Hydrospatial

🇨🇦 Wrapping up a final afternoon at OCEANS Conference 2024 in Halifax! We’ve been learning about the work of our esteemed partner NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration on the Ocean Enterprise Initiative, which aims to grow the Blue Economy. This effort heavily relies on better data, more seabed maps, and innovative technologies. 🤝 With help from our partner Marine Technology Society (MTS), NOAA highlighted the importance of uncrewed marine systems for future mapping and data acquisition. They currently operate two DriX autonomous vessels, developed by Seabed 2030 partner Exail and extensively use systems from Saildrone to gather vital ocean data. 🙌 Our head of partnerships, Stephen Hall, also had productive meetings with representatives from TELEDYNE CARIS B.V. the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, and organisers for our booth at Ocean Business in Southampton next year. #OCEANS2024 #BlueEconomy #OceanMapping #OceanScience #Hydrispatial

⛴️ On this #WorldMaritimeDay, the Seabed 2030 team want to recognize everyone working to make the ocean a safer place, from shipping to research to tourism. This year’s theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First”, could not be more timely. As we power on with our mission to map the world’s ocean floor by the end of the decade, we’re reminded of how crucial every piece of data collected is for enhancing safety and security at sea. 🧭 Seafarers rely on accurate seabed maps to avoid subsea obstacles and hazards to navigation - lower resolution versions of these maps are donated to Seabed 2030 to help compile our global map of the seabed. 🛰️ Deepening our knowledge of the seafloor enables us to better regulate deep-sea resources and equipment, including subsea cable infrastructure. 🌀Knowing the seafloor’s shape helps countries forecast weather patterns like tsunamis, helping coastal communities prepare and adapt. 🐋 Updated maps helps researchers and scientists determine which underwater habitats are safe to explore or need stronger conservation regulations to protect marine life.
