🐟 The Responsible Seafood Summit brings together seafood professionals to tackle the main challenges facing the aquaculture and fisheries sector. This year, Sara Barrento, FAI’s Head of e-Learning and aquaculture project manager will join industry leaders in a panel discussion at the event to talk about animal welfare. Why is Sara on this panel? Sara is an aquaculture expert committed to helping farmers, retailers, and consumers work together to improve the health and well-being of farmed aquatic species.  Sara uses FAI’s science-based Welfare Assessment Protocol, which has been translated into practical tools for farmers—the Tilapia Welfare App and eLearning courses—taking a bottom-up approach to improving fish welfare globally. 🗓️Date: Wednesday 23rd October 🎤 Panel title: "Aquatic Animal Welfare is Everyone's Business" 👩🌾🐠 Empowering Farmers: Once farmers learn what good welfare looks like, they can monitor and report using the four welfare indicators: Nutrition, Health, Behaviour and Environment—helping them make better management decisions to improve fish welfare and health, leading to improved productivity and reducing costs. 🌍📊 Universal Language of Welfare: Whether shrimp or fish, providing a universal, science-based welfare framework helps the entire supply chain understand what’s happening on the farm. 🏬🛒 Retailer’s Role: Retailers don’t need to know technical details if they can rely on welfare scores that reflect nutrition, behaviour, health, and environment. 🛡️🍽️ Consumer Confidence: Consumers want peace of mind that the seafood they buy is not only safe but that the animals had a good life. They want to trust that the welfare needs of the animals are met. In beautiful St Andrews for the Global Seafood Alliance’s Responsible Seafood Summit. Later this morning I will be chairing a session on Fisheries Improvement Projects with two amazing panels. When in Scotland…why use a bell or gong when you can have a bagpiper? At the Summit, instead of the usual bell to summon us back after coffee breaks, we’re treated to the sound of bagpipes! It’s a wonderful touch that adds to the local flavour and keeps everyone energised. #SeafoodSummit24

✨ We've got some exciting news to share! ⛴️ Vessel Viewer - the innovative vessel history tool developed by Global Fishing Watch and Trygg Mat Tracking - was announced as one of three finalists for the 2024 Responsible Seafood Innovation Awards. 👤 Our product manager for vessels and identity, ShenYan Liow, who will be presenting Vessel Viewer this week at the Global Seafood Alliance #SeafoodSummit24 in Scotland, noted one of the biggest hindrances to addressing challenges in global fisheries has been data sharing. 📊 "Vessel Viewer gathers all these disparate public data sources and applies our machine learning technology and big data analyses to be able to provide meaningful, accessible information to fisheries managers and decision-makers," said Liow. 🌐 Find out more about the award and Vessel Viewer's contribution to the world of fisheries innovation. bit.ly/4f7AYca

At the Global Seafood Alliance #SeafoodSummit24, Benjamin Weis, Sustainability Lead at Cargill Aqua Nutrition, highlighted the importance of responsible sourcing of marine raw materials and the critical role of Fishery Improvement Programs (FIPs) in this journey. “At Cargill, we are committed to sourcing our marine raw materials responsibly. To achieve this, we need more fisheries to get certified. Fishery Improvement Programs (FIPs) provide a credible and timebound approach to certification, allowing fisheries to access markets during their transition. We encourage more fisheries to join FIPs and get certified.” FIPs offer a structured pathway for fisheries to improve their practices and achieve certification, ensuring they can meet market demands sustainably. By participating in FIPs, fisheries not only enhance their sustainability credentials but also gain access to new markets during their transition period.
