As AI ventures deeper into uncharted territory, one thing is clear: it’s no longer about relying solely on massive datasets from the web. The new frontier is acquiring high-quality, labeled data through a data-centric AI approach. “There’s no more free lunch. You can’t rely on web-scale datasets anymore. You have to go and purchase it or produce it. That’s the frontier we’re at now,” says Alexander Ratner, CEO of Snorkel AI, in a new Financial Times feature by George Hammond. Discover how companies like Snorkel AI are making data development programmatic—labeling data in weeks, not years. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e_Zftf48

OpenAI recently released their guide to model selection, and it’s music to our data-centric AI hearts! 🎶 As they highlight: "By switching from GPT-4o to GPT-4o-mini with fine-tuning, we achieved equivalent performance for less than 2% of the cost, using only 1,000 labeled examples."This is a powerful example of data-centric AI in action— fine-tune smaller models to get the performance you need at the cost you want. 🚀 Curious how this approach can transform your AI strategy? Great collaborations yield amazing work! Google + Snorkel AI join forces again, this time in LA to share best practices on fine tuning, prompting and AI data development to yield better model results.
I've gone to a few SoCal GenAI Meetups, and I'm happy to say Snorkel AI contributed to another successful one last night at Google's office in LA. We had over 100 attendees (highest yet!). Standing room only for Bradley Fowler's talk on LLM fine tuning. Brad got in a rhythm going through notebook code on advanced prompt designs, labeling functions (LFs), quality models. Even broke out some theory breaking down SFT, PPO, DPO, KTO, ORPO (!!!!) (IYKYK). Absolute ML savagery. And - surprisingly - the audience could hang! Thanks to John Carnahan, Rohani Rajaratnam (PMP), Debbie (Ka) Chamkasem for your great work community building here in Southern California. Daniel Dawson Joni Ricard for being incredible hosts from Google. Plus the 9 (!) Snorkelers who came through. 🙏

Terrific article from Sharon Goldman in Fortune on the cost of making enterprise data AI-ready. "Corporate customers can spend millions of dollars on data labeling and other data development tasks, which can eat up 80% of their time and AI budget." -- Alex Ratner, Snorkel CEO and Co-Founder Companies can mitigate these costs by approaching data labeling more programmatically, like software development- which is what Snorkel AI uniquely enables, and currently drives at a range of federal agencies and enterprises like BNY, Wayfair and six of the ten top US banks.
NEW for Fortune: Building today’s massive AI models can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, with projections suggesting it could hit a staggering billion dollars within a few years. Much of that expense is for computing power from specialized chips—typically Nvidia GPUs, of which tens of thousands may be required, costing as much as $30,000 each. But companies training AI models, or fine-tuning existing models to improve performance on specific tasks, also struggle with another often overlooked and rising cost: data labeling. This is a painstaking process in which generative AI models are trained with data that is affixed with tags so that the model can recognize and interpret patterns. Data labeling has long been used to develop AI models for self-driving cars, for example. A camera captures images of pedestrians, street signs, cars, and traffic lights and human annotators label the images with words like “pedestrian,” “truck,” or “stop sign.” The labor-intensive process has also raised ethics concerns. After releasing ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI was widely criticized for outsourcing the data labeling work that helped make the chatbot less toxic to Kenyans earning less than $2 hourly. Today’s generic large language models (LLMs) go through an exercise related to data labeling called Reinforcement Learning Human Feedback, in which humans provide qualitative feedback or rankings on what the model produces. That is one significant source of rising costs, as is the effort involved in labeling private data that companies want to incorporate into their AI models, such as customer information or internal corporate data. In addition, labeling highly technical, expert-level data in fields like legal, finance, and healthcare is driving up expenses. That’s because some companies are hiring high-cost doctors, lawyers, PhDs, and scientists to label certain data or outsourcing the work to third-party companies such as Scale AI, which recently secured a jaw-dropping $1 billion in funding as its CEO predicted strong revenue growth by year-end. Thanks to William Falcon Kjell Carlsson, Ph.D. Neal K. Shah Matt Shumer Bob Rogers for their comments! https://lnkd.in/eygmGJi3
