🚀 #SYMBATRENDS kicks off! Let’s talk textile waste ♻️👕 💡 As the first insight of our campaign, we’re starting with a key question: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔? 🧶 In 2019, the EU-27 consumed 4.85 million tonnes of new apparel, representing a staggering €77.82 billion in value. But here’s the problem: 5.8 million tonnes of textiles are discarded by #EU consumers every year, including #clothing and household textiles. 🎯 The EU has set ambitious goals to tackle this issue. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞. This will help divert reusable and recyclable textiles from being sent to landfills or incinerated, turning them into valuable resources for reuse and recycling. ⚔️ However, the challenge is steep: 📈 While some countries like #Germany and #Netherlands are leading in textile waste collection, 📉 others like #Latvia and #Poland are lagging behind. The problem is compounded by the fact that, 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 due to contamination with non-reusable items. ♻️ This complex situation highlights the urgent need for circular solutions to make textiles not only #reusable but also #recyclable to avoid a further increase in #waste 🗑️ 🔍 Let’s explore how we can address this challenge together.
