It began with a business problem. Coca-Cola was selling a lot of its Minute Maid juices in Africa. But to make them, it had to import fruit puree from thousands of miles away. At the same time, thousands of farmers were growing mangoes and passion fruit in East Africa. But there was no organized supply chain for companies like Coca-Cola, who needed reliable volumes and reliable quality to source locally. The solution? We worked with #CocaCola and the #GatesFoundation to: 🥭 Train 50,000+ farmers how to grow and tend their fruit crops to maximize quality and yields. Average yields increased 21%. 💵 Help farmers create or strengthen over 1,000 producer business groups, strengthening the supply chain through bulk sales. 🤝🏾 Enable several local processors to produce fruit purée from locally grown fruit to the standard Coca-Cola required. When Minute Maid Mango hit the shelves soon afterward, it was Coca-Cola’s first locally sourced fruit drink in East Africa. Since then, Coca-Cola has used this model to expand local supply chains across Africa. “[The project] was so successful that…what started out as an attempt to manage cost levels for our juice drinks and nectars ended up being an Africa-wide project to source locally,” said the Coca-Cola supply chain manager in Kenya. The farmers -- one-third of them women -- benefited as well. They were growing more and better quality fruit, found reliable buyers, and increased their incomes from fruit by an average of 142%. "I was very happy because I realized educating my children would not be hard ever again," said one farmer, Magdalene Gachungiri. Later, this collaboration was recognized by the U.S. State Department and others as the best public-private partnership of the year. Of course, no solution is perfect, and a lot more progress is needed. But efforts like these show how business problems can also solve #poverty – and create #economicopportunity for all. #sharedvalue #womensempowerment
