The Clean Fight’s Head of Strategy Nyla Mabro recently spoke with We Don't Have Time about our work facilitating the adoption of climate solutions in New York, the transformative power of small-dollar catalytic capital to knock down barriers and get solutions adopted, and the global impact of our parent organization New Energy Nexus. Watch to learn more! “Our belief is that we have the majority of the solutions we need to solve the climate crisis. They’re just not being adopted quickly enough. Why is that? It’s not simple and we haven’t been doing this for a long time, so there aren’t clear pathways for people to follow. But it’s completely doable. We can do this. We just need to figure out ways to remove the barriers.” 👉 https://join-nex.co/time

This Climate Week we were thrilled to bring together leaders from across New York’s energy storage ecosystem – developers, capital partners, ecosystem experts, and state, city, and federal government officials – to explore innovative solutions supporting the development of energy storage projects in New York State. Believe it or not, it was the only event solely dedicated to energy storage during NY Climate Week this year. We dug into the thorny issues around energy storage financing gaps and some of the emerging solutions identified and tested through our Energy Storage Capital Challenge. From the disproportionate impact small amounts of catalytic capital can have to de-risk projects to the power of technical assistance to unlock new permitting pathways – approaches that can be replicated for broader market impact. Explore the learnings in our brand new Energy Storage Challenges and Solutions Framework and add your thoughts 👉 https://lnkd.in/gfJX-QdW? Thanks to our inspiring speakers and panelists who unearthed ways the market can support first-of-many energy storage deployments - Melissa Klembara of the DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, David Sandbank of NYSERDA, Kelsey Clair of NY Green Bank, Olga E Petrova of New Energy New York, William Acker of New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST), and Lara Pierpoint of Trellis Climate. To our six innovative Energy Storage Capital Challenge finalists - Beacon Power, Convergent Energy and Power, NineDot Energy, Orenda, Inc, Power Edison, and Sprocket Power. (connect with them 👉 https://lnkd.in/gvqC5W-9) And to all of you who attended, and who are doing the hard work to achieve progress on NY State’s energy storage adoption.

Last week we had the honour of bringing together the best of the NY ecosystem to meet the finalists of the Empire Technology Prize 👉 www.thecleanfight.com/etp. These seven teams will spend the next year focused on advancing their clean heating solutions (namely high temp heat pumps and distribution solutions) to make it easier for tall building owners to decarbonize their steam heating systems. Thank you to everyone who attended - from city and state government, community organizations, the depth and breadth of the real estate community, and the NY climate ecosystem. It was incredible to have the titans of climate action together for this occasion. If you didn't make it, reach out to connect with the finalists https://lnkd.in/eVN_uW6B More thanks. To our demonstration partners who gave hours of their time talking with the finalists, touring the boiler rooms of buildings on scorching summer days, to learn about each other and start to see where opportunities for pilots might emerge - CBRE Investment Management, Columbia University, Empire State Realty Trust, Fairstead, L+M Development Partners LLC, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), Rudin, Tishman Speyer, and Vornado Realty Trust. To our speakers, panelists, and moderators, who brought context to why New York needs these solutions so much, and all that we can and must achieve together - Anthony Fiore, Chief Program Officer, NYS of NYSERDA, Mike Santomassimo of Wells Fargo, Kelly Souza, Michael Reed, Maria Gallucci, Lauren Moss, and Laura Spencer Humphrey. The event was held in the truly stunning Townhall at PENN 2 - New York - newly retrofitted by Vornado Realty Trust. So many thanks to Lauren Moss and the Skylight team for hosting us. Of course, the best for last. These seven teams are doing incredible work to help bring new clean heating solutions to market, designed specifically for the peculiarities of New York's tall building - ENERIN AS; Johnson Controls; Miller Proctor Nickolas, Inc.; AtmosZero; Clean Heat Technologies a Thar Energy spin-off; Ambient, with Flow Environmental Systems, and Gil-Bar; and Hydronic Shell Technologies with Cycle Retrotech. Follow us and them to learn more about the development of their solutions and the Prize. 📸 Tamara Staples

Big day! This morning Governor Hochul announced the Finalists of the Empire Technology Prize. These seven solutions are creating easier pathways to decarbonize the heating of New York’s tall buildings, by working with their existing infrastructure. Learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/ey-kZgH4 Buildings are responsible for 70% of NYC’s and a third of NYS’ GHG emissions. It’s pretty simple - if we don’t decarbonize buildings, we don’t solve the climate crisis. The tricky thing is, New York’s buildings are primarily heated using steam or high temp hot water (not common elsewhere in the world!). Hence the creation of the Empire Tech Prize; designed to incentivize the development and demonstration of easier-to-adopt technologies tailored to the peculiarities of NY’s buildings. In short, heat pumps that produce steam or high temp hot water, or less-disruptive-to-install distribution systems to enable the adoption of low temp heat pumps. Congratulations to our seven Finalists teams, Ambient teaming with Flow Environmental Systems and Gil-Bar; AtmosZero; Clean Heat Technologies; ENERIN AS; Hydronic Shell Technologies teaming with Cycle Retrotech; Johnson Controls and Miller Proctor Nickolas, Inc. who’ll spend the next year developing their solutions - with the help of up to $1M each in prize money - and working with our world class real estate demonstration partners CBRE Investment Management, Columbia University, Empire State Realty Trust, Fairstead, L+M Development Partners LLC, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), Rudin, Tishman Speyer and Vornado Realty Trust to look for piloting opportunities - tapping into our $2M demonstration fund. Thank you to our funders and collaborators for their support in getting us to this day - NYSERDA, Wells Fargo, RMI, New Energy Nexus Learn more about the Finalists and how you can get involved 👉 www.thecleanfight.com/etp

It was a thrill for The Clean Fight to be invited to participate in the Breakthrough Energy Summit in London last week. To be with 1200 like-minded individuals, laser focused on how we can scale up high-impact climate solutions. Some of our observations: 👉 The convening power was incredible, with all roads leading to action. Innovators, corporate leaders, investors, philanthropists, government, not-for-profits, all sharing what's working, what's not, being honest about the journey, asking for help. 👉 Spaces matter. Getting people out of their day-to-day, into an inspiring place where they have the mental time and space to think, explore, engage, is priceless. Asking for two days of people's time is no joke. Everyone showed up. Cell phones in sessions were surprisingly rare. The Building Grand Challenge Track got to visit the Tower Bridge Court carbon neutral building (FORE Partnership) which is an inspiring testament to what you can achieve with optimism and persistence. 👉 Realistic but un-jaded. No one was pulling any punches, but optimism reigned. Was wonderful to see the Honorable Rachel Jacobson Chief Sustainability Officer for the Army discussing their plans to decarbonise the army's 200,000 (yes 200,000) buildings and looking for solutions. Eric Toone brilliantly dissecting the technologies we have and those we still need. John Kerry and Kerstin Jorna discussing the policy path forward. Thank you to Nishant B. for the invite and curating a fantastic buildings track. And wonderful to spend real time with many of our US cohort companies and partners - sometimes you just need to leave NY to connect with your friends from home CarbonCure Technologies, enVerid Systems, Inc., 75F, Blue Frontier, Inc., Aeroseal and our customer collaborators Helen Gurfel, Jonathan Flaherty, Jim Barrett, Julia Gisewite, LEED AP, WELL AP.
