At UM, we’re dedicated to understanding audiences in all their complexities and nuances. Our latest research, conducted in collaboration with UN Women UK, explores the intricate dynamics of caregiving and its broader societal impacts. The report, The Care Economy: Society’s Engine Room, was recently featured in Marketing Week and highlights the often invisible burdens faced by carers - both paid and unpaid - and how these challenges affect gender equality and the economy. One of the key findings featured is that over half (53%) of people with caregiving responsibilities feel they are ‘not very’ or ‘not at all’ visible in society. Caregiving is also taking a toll on people’s professional lives, with nearly half (48%) of unpaid carers stating that their caring duties negatively affect their ability to work. The research also highlights how carers feel underrepresented in the media. Almost one in three (29%) expressed negative feelings about their portrayal in popular culture, a sentiment that is especially strong among single parents and men aged 65 and above. We’re proud to partner with UN Women UK to ensure we address these important, nuanced insights in our work.
