Standards for a Sustainable Future

About us

Verra works to provide standards for a sustainable future that address pressing environmental and sustainable development issues. Through robust standards, we help accurately quantify benefits and drive investment in responsible, high-performing projects and programs. We work closely with partners in civil society, governments and the private sector to develop novel frameworks and enable results on the ground. Our flagship standard, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, is the longstanding leading standard in the voluntary carbon market. Since our start in 2009, Verra has expanded our work into new arenas based on increasing demand for social and environmental standards. Today, a growing staff with operatives around the world manage our standards and programs, including the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standard, the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard and the Landscape Standard. We consistently work with our partners to ensure that our existing and new requirements reflect the most current knowledge and global best practice. We are steadily expanding the scope of Verra to respond to the need for new, forward-thinking standards, with a focus on market-based, workable solutions to thorny social and environmental challenges. Verra was originally founded by a collection of business and environmental leaders who saw a need for greater quality assurance in voluntary carbon markets. Our founding partners - The Climate Group, International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and The World Economic Forum - convened a team of global carbon market experts to draft the first Verified Carbon Standard requirements. World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) joined the effort soon after.

🌿 Last week, Verra attended the #ChileCarbonForum in Santiago and connected with other carbon markets stakeholders to discuss Verra’s engagement with government entities, the private sector, and civil society in the region.  Verra also supported the event as a Premier Partner. 💡 Angelo Sartori, senior director, regional engagement at Verra, and María Ana González, senior program officer, VCS methodologies, led a workshop about Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. They discussed how the program’s role in the voluntary and compliance markets (in domestic and international contexts). Additionally, Angelo participated in a panel discussion on the contributions of carbon projects to Chile's Emissions Compensation System (SCE), which is the basis for the country's domestic carbon market. The VCS Program is eligible to contribute carbon credits to trading in the SCE, and credits issued by the program were already traded in the market’s first cycle. Angelo emphasized the need to increase the number of projects in Chile to ensure a steady supply of carbon credits for this market where currently demand exceeds supply. 📍 Angelo and María Ana appreciated the opportunity to connect with stakeholders to explore opportunities for advancing climate action in the region. Thank you to everyone who visited our booth and attended our workshop! 🌍 #Verra #ChileCarbonForum #StandardsMatter #ClimateAction #CarbonMarkets #SustainableDevelopment

📢 Verra has published a comprehensive updated Verra Program Fee Schedule that lays out the fee structures and details for all its standards programs. The fee changes will enable Verra to do the following: ➡️ Maintain the operation of high-quality standards programs that are advancing critically needed climate action and sustainable development ➡️ Continue implementing improvements to ensure the quality and rigor of its programs ➡️ Further advance its digitization and digitalization efforts to streamline project review processes for its stakeholders In parallel, Verra is streamlining its rigorous project review processes to add greater efficiency. With this new fee schedule, Verra is revising its approach to charging for the issuance of Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) to incentivize projects to submit accurate and thoroughly documented verification requests. Going forward, Verra will base levies on the quantity of emission reductions and removals (ERRs) claimed in a project’s monitoring report and not on the number of VCUs Verra ultimately approves for issuance. To learn more, please see our full announcement, which includes the fee change details and a comprehensive FAQ page: https://bit.ly/4eMCkcu 💻 Please join us for a webinar on November 26 at 11:00 am ET, where the Verra team will provide an overview of the new fee schedule. 🎙️ In the latest episode of the #Carbonsations podcast, Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos discusses the voluntary carbon market (VCM) with Violet George of Carbon Herald. Some key takeaways from the episode: 💡 The VCM drives real climate action on the ground. It mobilizes private-sector funding, which is key to reaching global climate goals. As the VCM continues to grow, trust will be a key component of its success. 💡 The VCM reduces emissions, but projects also have important sustainable development benefits and positive impacts on local communities. 💡 Reducing Scope 3 emissions, including through Verra's Scope 3 Standard Program, will be key to advancing corporate climate action even further. 💡 Verra is set to support the scaling and improvement of the VCM through (1) enhancing the efficiency and transparency of internal processes (e.g., through digitalization) and (2) strengthening relationships with other market stakeholders. #Verra #StandardsMatter #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction

Verra has released two new tools in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program to assess the additionality of project activities: 📄 VCS Tool VT0008 Additionality Assessment 📄 VCS Tool VT0009 Combined Baseline and Additionality Assessment VT0008 and VT0009 are designed to meet the additionality requirements of the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) Assessment Framework of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).  Verra expects to release revisions of methodologies to adopt these new additionality tools in the coming months. If the ICVCM approves the methodologies relying on the new VCS tools, Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) generated by projects using these methodologies will qualify for CCP labels. VT0008 and VT0009 provide procedures and requirements for conducting the investment, barrier, and common practice analyses, as well as identifying the baseline scenario where applicable. They replace several Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) tools. 🔎 For more details, see the full announcement: https://bit.ly/3BIHNCF #Verra #StandardsMatter #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction
