One third of family caregivers have left a position because they couldn't reconcile work and caregiving obligations. That’s just one of the critical impacts of care on today’s workforce that Professor Joseph Fuller and Professor William Kerr discuss in this recent episode of Harvard Business School’s podcast “Managing the Future of Work.” But as Professor Fuller shares, it doesn’t have to be this way for millions of employee caregivers. Caregiving benefits can reduce this rate of turnover and provide a substantial material return for companies. "There are hard economics at stake here, and what we have found through research, using data from a company called Wellthy, is that when you look at the systems effects of providing care economics, they actually have very attractive return profiles," says Professor Fuller — especially through reduced turnover and higher employee engagement. The business case is clear: investing in care support for employees delivers returns just like investing in quality operations. Companies avoid the waste of losing valuable talent, just as manufacturers avoid production waste. The “sandwich generation” is growing. More and more Millenials and Gen Xers are struggling to balance the obligations of parenting school-age children with caring for their elderly loved ones, while trying to maintain their careers. That’s the heart of this powerful op-ed by Maria Flynn for U.S. News & World Report. Flynn highlights how millions of families are overburdened, with one-third of caregivers ultimately forced to quit their jobs—an impact that strains families and holds back our economy. As Flynn emphasizes, “fixing the crisis will require new – and significant – investment to cultivate the caregiving workforce that aging Americans need and deserve.” With an estimated 37 million Americans faced with the responsibility of caring for aging parents, employers are uniquely positioned to drive meaningful change. By implementing solutions like expanded care benefits and Employee Assistance Programs, companies can help ease the mounting pressure on the sandwich generation. "Caregiving employees carry an invisible weight on their shoulders every day." The impact? Decreased productivity, increased turnover risk, and compromised engagement at work. But there's hope. As Wellthy Co-founder and CEO, Lindsay Jurist-Rosner, recently shared on the HR Dive and Aon podcast "The Stretch: Workforce health and benefits – expanded," when employees know they have support to manage family caregiving while excelling at work, everything changes. That peace of mind is transformative. The business case is clear: robust caregiving benefits deliver measurable results through reduced turnover, fewer leaves of absence, and lower healthcare costs. Wellthy had an incredible time at HLTH Inc. this week in Las Vegas, connecting with innovators and leaders across the healthcare industry. Our Co-Founder and CEO, Lindsay Jurist-Rosner, participated in the "Employer's Caregiving Era" panel alongside remarkable leaders who are shaping the future of work and advancing support for employee caregivers (left to right): Brittney Riley Gavini, Investor at Pivotal Ventures, Evan Falchuk, CEO of Family First, Melinda Izbicki, Senior Principal at Mercer, and Amanta Mazumdar, VP of Total Rewards at Hilton. The conversation explored the critical role employers play in supporting their caregiver employees, particularly those in the sandwich generation balancing multiple care responsibilities. The panelists also examined how the definition of caregiving is expanding to encompass the full depth and complexity of employees' lives, and envisioned an ideal future where enhanced public and private sector infrastructure better supports families. We're grateful to the HLTH team and so many passionate attendees this year who are shaping important and vital conversations around care and caregiving. Thank you for making this such a memorable experience! #HLTH #HLTH2024 #EmployeeCaregivers

Two years ago, Wellthy embarked on a mission to tackle one of the most pressing issues facing millions of caregivers: the overwhelming sense of isolation they feel balancing the needs of their loved ones and the pressures of everyday life. Even though 53 million people in the U.S. identify as caregivers, we know that caregiving often feels like a solitary, daunting journey that many feel compelled to navigate in silence. Enter Wellthy Community – our online peer network designed to bridge the gap between caregivers and create a supportive ecosystem. Our goal was to foster a sense of connection and empower caregivers to share their experiences, challenges, and resources, making the caregiving journey a little less lonely. As we celebrate Wellthy Community’s second anniversary, we're thrilled to see its continued growth and impact. With 6,000 members seeking support for caregiving across a wide range of needs—from aging relatives to children, teens, and individuals navigating complex medical conditions like dementia, cancer, depression, anxiety, and more—we’re deeply honored that Wellthy Community has become a trusted resource for hope, information, expertise, and connection. This week Hearst Magazines and HearstLab hosted the inaugural "Female Force Summit"—a truly spectacular event highlighting women entrepreneurs who are building a more inclusive future, and driving incredible impact across so many sectors. Wellthy's CEO and co-founder Lindsay Jurist-Rosner discussed the impact of caregiving for women in the workforce, addressing how family caregivers navigate their days and balance the demands of work alongside childcare and eldercare. She shared the stage with some amazing voices in health, wellness, and entrepreneurship—including Alexandra Krieger (2x World Cup Champion and Olympian), Melodie Narain-Blackwell (Founder, Color of Gastrointestinal Illnesses), Deshauna Barber-Echols (former Miss USA, Army Veteran & Motivational Speaker), and Liz Baker Plosser (Editor-in-Chief, Women's Health). What an incredible gathering of women who are breaking new ground and fostering innovation in business, technology, healthcare, and beyond. From working as a therapeutic staff support to guiding adults through inpatient behavioral health care, Nicole Spuhler brings over a decade of diverse mental health experience to her role as a Wellthy Care Adviser Specialist. Now, Nicole leverages her depth of experience to provide Wellthy members with precise mental health resources they need. Nicole's profound commitment to personalized care shines through in her approach: “It’s such a huge responsibility that people are willing to tell us the most intimate details about what they're going through, and that they put that trust in us that we're gonna find them the best provider. When I take on a task, I take so much care in these recommendations, that if I'm giving a member a recommendation, I would give the same recommendation to my mom. Each task is really customized and there's never been a single task where I've had the same results, because I look so specifically for each individual person and get to know that person just from their background story that they provide.” Our latest Care Expert Spotlight highlights Nicole's commitment to expanding access to mental health support and her mission to empower caregivers with the knowledge and resources they need to maintain their own well-being while caring for others.
