As someone who started their career with Harris Health, I can tell firsthand that it's an incredible workplace. However, when I was searching for my first job, there were a few things that I wish someone had told me. So, let me share some of my experiences and advice with you. First and foremost, finding an organization whose vision, mission, and values align with yours is crucial. These aren't just fancy slogans that you see on commercials or healthcare organization websites. They're the guiding principles that shape every policy and guideline of an organization. As a bedside nurse, you're expected to embody these values in your care. So, it's essential to be passionate about the same values as your organization; otherwise, it could lead to disappointment and frustration. Don’t limit yourself to just one specialty. As a new nurse, getting fixated on one particular area and ignoring other opportunities is easy. I'm guilty of this, too; I wanted to be a Pediatric ER Nurse. That was what I decided prior to nursing school, and I took (or begged) for every opportunity to have clinicals in the ER. Truthfully, I didn’t give any other clinical settings a fair chance because my mind was already set. After graduation, I continued with this mentality and knew that I would prefer an ER position over others, without considering whether the organization's values aligned with mine. At that time, I knew nothing about Harris Health, but I was fortunate enough to realize that my love for working in pediatrics stemmed from my passion for helping those most in need. So, remember, apply, and select a position based on the organization and not just the unit or specialty. By doing so, you'll be on the right path toward achieving your end goal, even if it means starting in an area that wasn’t your first choice. If you remain open-minded, along the way, you'll gain valuable experience that will only enhance your skills and make you the best in your field. You might even discover a new passion, just as I did.
Discover the Harris Health System Nurse Residency Program—a structured and evidence-based initiative. Our focus is on incorporating best-practice guidelines to aid new graduates in a seamless transition to the world of nursing. Accepting applications on January 29 until February 20. Start date: July 15, 2024 Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3YHbmfd #NurseResidency #HealthcareJourney #NewGradNurse #WeLiveThis

Nurses week is a complicated relationship for many... I've grappled with whether to share this. Yet, now feels like the right moment. It's vital to acknowledge the complexity surrounding this celebration of our profession. For numerous nurses, it's a reminder of unresolved trauma stemming from our work in healthcare. We navigate through triggering experiences, feeling a tug-of-war between honoring our dedication and confronting the realities we face daily.🎭 The festivities and events meant to honor us often fall flat. They can feel like empty gestures, highlighting the stark difference between recognition and genuine support. Pizza parties, yard signs, and posters miss the mark of what we truly need. Years of this cycle culminate during nurses week, leaving many of us feeling resentful and unheard. 😷 To my fellow nurses struggling through this week, I want you to know you're not alone. While I understand a #linkedin post won't solve the systemic issues plaguing healthcare, I hold onto hope. Hope that we can reshape #nursesweek into something more meaningful. A week dedicated to gratitude and amplifying our voices as stakeholders in healthcare. 🤝 Let's push for initiatives that bring about real change in our working conditions. Let's demand more than token gestures. Imagine a week where our voices lead to tangible actions, where our concerns are met with genuine solutions. Together, we can redefine nurses week as a time of empowerment and progress. 💪 #nursesonlinkedin #healthcare #nursinglife #traumainnursing #emotionaljourney #nursingstruggles #nurseappreciation #systemicchange #nurseadvocacy #gratitude #healthcarechallenges #empowerournurses #nursevoice #realchange #workingconditions #nurseempowerment #nursingprogress #healthcareforall #nursingcommunity #nursingleadership American Nurses Association American Organization for Nursing Leadership Nursing ANA-OHIO Ohio Nurses Association National League for Nursing The National Institutes of Health Ohio Board of Nursing National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Don't Clock Out Commission for Nurse Reimbursement Nursing Is STEM AACN (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses) Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN)

Truly key in any organization
"Although transactional issues (workload, compensation, professional development) remain a serious problem, the primary theme that emerged as related to retaining nurses was relational issues, “the importance of being heard, supported, and aligned with organizational values for job satisfaction, retention, and performance.” https://lnkd.in/eiBhBvS3 #nursingvoices #nursingworkforce #burnout Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Maureen "Shawn" Kennedy, MA, RN, FAAN Cynda Rushton

Confession time: I don’t particularly care for nursing bumper stickers. 🤷♂️ I might have caught your attention with a dash of 'clickbait', but I promise, it's for a good reason. 👇 As a fellow nurse, let me assure you, I’m not some disenchanted nurse who’s so jaded towards the profession that I want to put down the public image. I’m also not a nursing influencer looking for clicks by providing “hot takes” or controversial statements. Quite the opposite. My feelings stem from a deep-seated passion for our profession. 💗 😷 Nursing holds a special place in society, renowned for its reliability and compassionate care amidst the complexities of modern healthcare. We should wear our nursing pride like a badge of honor and share our stories with enthusiasm. 🎖 🏆 Yet, I've noticed a troubling trend: the celebration of nursing often gets pigeonholed into bedside roles. It's as if the only valid depiction of a nurse is one providing direct patient care and said bumper stickers. 💉 🤔 But as nurses, we know better. Our profession has evolved far beyond the days of being physician handmaidens. Today, we chart diverse career paths, from leadership roles to advanced practice. 🚀 🎓 So here's my point: let's redefine how we celebrate nursing. Let's honor nurses as the innovators, data experts, patient advocates, and the clinical stakeholders that they are. Nurses do and always have deserved a seat at the table. We need to start building those opportunities or ‘chairs’ into our academia and professional onboarding. 👩⚕️ 🏥 It's time to pave the way for nurses to thrive in all aspects of their profession. Let's celebrate nurses in every capacity, whether at the bedside or beyond🎇 #nursingpride #beyondthebedside #nurseinnovators #nursingevolution #celebratenurses #nurseleadership #nursingcareer #nursingcommunity #nurseadvocates #nurseempowerment #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareleadership American Nurses Association American Organization for Nursing Leadership American Nurse ANA-OHIO National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) National League for Nursing National Student Nurses' Association Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing American Board of Nursing Specialties American Academy of Nursing
