Elevating Occupational Health: The Impact on Return to Work of Public Hospital Collaboration with Private Occupational Health Services 👩⚕️🤝👩🚒 This Finnish register-based cohort study shows that a simple Coordinated #returntowork (CRtW) model, a collaboration of several public hospital care and private occupational health service providers works to shorten the time of RTW after #orthopaedicsurgery. In the CRtW model, a hospital physician in charge of discharge of the patient makes an electronic referral to occupational health services, the occupational healthcare meets the patient shortly after, and work capacity and support actions are individually evaluated. 📅 ✔ During the first year of the CRtW model, the average RTW period shortened by 9.1 days (95% CI 4.1 to 14.1) for #hip #arthroplasty and 14.4 days (95% CI 7.5 to 21.3) for #knee arthroplasty. The observed differences were sustained over longer follow-up times. Aging with Breast Cancer and how Occupational Therapy can Help To recognize breast cancer awareness month our blog post is exploring aging with breast cancer and how occupational therapy can help. Did you know the median age of a breast cancer diagnosis is 62, and nearly 20% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 75? In fact, women 70+ have a 1/24 chance of developing breast cancer at some point in their lives. Older adults with breast cancer may experience a number of physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges during and after treatment. Changes in physical strength and endurance is a common side effect, drastically increasing one’s risk for falls. Similarly, many people experience changes in their cognitive functions such as delayed processing, feeling “fuzzy”, and decreased attention. These changes can lead to decreased independence with safety awareness and even everyday tasks like paying your bills or organizing your day. People may also experience a whole range of emotions from deep anxiety and depression to acceptance and gratitude. Many of these symptoms impact your ability to do the things you need to do and want to do in a day. This week I diagnosed a new case of #silicosis in the occupational medicine clinic unfortunately. He was an #agate grinder with about 20 years of work experience in this job. This is the 26th case of silicosis in this job that I have found. Agate is a quartz rich mineral that is used for producing jewelry and ornaments materials. Although, it is believed that occupational asthma is the most common #occupationalmedicine lung disease today, and although according to the ILO/WHO goals, we should not see any cases of this disease after 2030, unfortunately we still see new cases of this deadly disease. Certainly, the global Program for the Elimination of Silicosis (#GPES) needs to be reviewed, upgraded and reformed again, which requires teamworking and consensus between experts in occupational medicine, occupational hygiene and employers and employees representatives. In the meantime, emphasizing, follow-up and support of international organizations like #ilo and #WHO to sensitize governments and requiring them for changing the rules and executive instructions are very important and crucial.
