"SpaceX will never be successful." That didn't age well. We just passed the 10 year anniversary of this lecture/statement and he couldn't have been more wrong. Being an expert doesn't mean you are always right, even in your domain of expertise. And you will likely be challenged when bold new ideas come to be. When I was a Master's student at University of Michigan College of Engineering, a lecturer told our class that SpaceX would never be successful. Luckily, we have the lecture on video so you don't have to take my word for it. Check out the 39 minute mark of this video, in particular: https://lnkd.in/gBvYFPx2 Remember, this was in 2014, many years before SpaceX was a household name. (It's a household name even in non-nerdy households now, right?) Hearing an expert saying that the ambitious company I had my sights set on wasn't going to be successful didn't dampen my belief in the work being done at SpaceX, nor did it stop me from joining them for internships and full time after graduation. I've made a habit of setting my sights on the stars despite pushback from naysayers in life and in business. Now, as a co-founder of AdAstra Talent Advisors, I get to partner with leaders who are forging ahead on brilliant paths even when their outcomes are uncertain (and with their fair share of naysayers, too). If you've ever pushed back on something that resulted in a big win, or you've been a naysayer who was proved wrong and are brave enough to tell us more, I'd love to hear about it in the comments. These stories are great reminders that individually and collectively, we won't accomplish groundbreaking things if we're deterred by resistance. #NewSpace #SpaceX #Innovation

Intern Insight #6 by OSC’s student intern Chad McElroy: Yesterday, I attended an “Aerospace 101” luncheon hosted by AIAA on Capitol Hill where OSC’s very own Jason Kim spoke as a panelist. Panels such as these play an important role in educating Hill staffers on pressing issues in space policy; this one underscored how space mission authorization must be a priority for American policymakers. The Outer Space Treaty requires that all signatory nations supervise the space activities of their respective non-governmental entities. Three federal agencies authorize commercial space activity in the United States: the Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation authorizes the launch and landing of vehicles from space; the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Space Commerce licenses satellite payloads that observe the Earth; and the Federal Communications Commission approves communications to, from, and within space. New commercial developments are illuminating gaps in the current space authorization framework. Activities like in-space satellite servicing, commercial spacewalks, and lunar vehicles do not clearly fall under the purview of today’s regulatory agencies. Their narrow authorities make it a challenge for the United States to adhere to its international obligations. Furthermore, this regulatory uncertainty is discouraging private investment in new space ventures and leading to costly delays that could ultimately impact government initiatives. As the commercial space industry continues to innovate and grow, American policymakers must ensure that our regulatory framework is adequately equipped to support it into the future.

As World Space Week kicks off www.worldspaceweek.org it seemed worth looking at the infographic produced by Space Partnership on the UK's Satellite Manufacturing Supply Chain and seeing how companies in the West of Scotland Space Cluster feature across it The cluster has two companies classed as Tier 1, 2 and 3 in the shape of AAC Clyde Space and Alba Orbital. A Tier 1 and 2 company with Spire. A Tier 2 and 3 in the shape of Raytheon UK and a Tier 2 only with Craft Prospect. And in terms of Tier 3 suppliers Metahelios ltd, MVP Aerospace Ltd and recent inward investor, Simera Sense UK. We can add in the mix a great range of regional supply chain companies who support our manufacturers in terms of components and parts, hardware and materials. From an R&D perspective, we can add four Universities into the mix University of Strathclyde, University of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian University and University of the West of Scotland. If you are part of this value chain that makes the West of Scotland the driving force in Scotland's space sector and a critical part of the UK's end-to-end space capability, then add your company details to the cluster directory and make sure you are visible in the region and beyond... https://lnkd.in/e3WCRH7V Craig Clark MBE FREng FRSE FIES Peter Anderson John Charlick Andrew Strain Tom Walkinshaw Theresa Condor Alan Kane Steve Greenland Natasha Grummitt Yash D.
