A research team led by Dr Lisa Mielke at La Trobe's School of Cancer Medicine, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute, have made a discovery that holds great potential for treating one of the world's most prominent forms of cancer. The team found that patients whose bowel cancer tumours showed evidence of a particular type of immune cell (known as a 'gamma delta t-cell') had much better health outcomes. This led researchers to take a closer look at gamma delta t-cells to better understand how to harness and enhance their cancer-killing potential. The research - shortlisted for a prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Scientific Resarch - may pave the way for new immunotherapies that improve health outcomes and save the lives of countless cancer patients. The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center is taking on lung cancer from every angle. The Tom and Julie Wood Center for Lung Cancer Research was established in March 2024 with a $20 million gift from Julie Wood. The gift honors her late husband, Tom Wood, the well-known Indianapolis auto executive who died of lung cancer in 2010. The newly established center will expand efforts in basic science research to understand the complexities of lung cancer at a cellular level, guide the development of innovative lung cancer drugs, support early-phase clinical trials for IU-developed treatments, and expand the lung cancer precision genomics program. The goal of #PrecisionOncology is to improve outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients by providing the right treatment at the right time for each patient. But it's clear that there's still a lot of work to do before this is possible for every patient and every cancer. As we work towards that goal, it is important to understand that #precisiononcology is also about knowing if a drug will NOT work for a certain patient population and what side-effects taking that drug may have. This knowledge empowers patients to make treatment decisions based on their own values. Dr. Laura Hopkins is working on a clinical trial aimed at measuring this very element in patients with #ovariancancer in #Saskatchewan. We spoke to Dr. Hopkins to better understand why this type of research is important, and how the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network is taking a multi-pronged approach to advance precision medicine for more cancer patients in Canada by supporting projects like this. #TeamCanadaOfCancerResearch

The statistics around brain cancer are shocking: * Brain cancer kills more children than any other disease. * Brain cancer kills more adults under 40 than any other cancer. * Brain cancer is extremely difficult to access and virtually impossible to completely remove. * There is not enough tumour tissue available for research. * We don’t have the data to understand what patients’ need, what works and what doesn’t. * After 40 years of delivering brain cancer treatment and research the survival rate has barely improved. This needs to change.
Our goal is to develop the national research infrastructure needed to deliver this change. What we are doing is ambitious - years in the making. Four Pan London Cancer Research Fellowships have been awarded by participating NHS Cancer Alliances in London. Research areas cover improving the linkage between imaging and pathology diagnosis, using algorithms to predict non-small-cell lung cancer reoccurrence, health inequalities in local head and neck cancer services, and supporting young patients living with cancer. The Fellowship Programme’s focus is aligned with the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan, with projects aimed at improving early diagnosis, addressing cancer inequalities and providing appropriate personalised care for people living with and beyond cancer. Dr. Laura Hopkins (Saskatchewan Cancer Agency & University of Saskatchewan) is a gynecologic oncologist and cancer researcher, who leads a clinical trial measuring how patients with #ovariancancer use information from molecular tumour testing to guide treatment decisions based on quality of life and outcome considerations. This study, which is contributing cases to the MOHCCN Gold Cohort, will provide an important step towards measuring the real-world impact of precision oncology on the lives of cancer patients.
