Researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) are working in support of ERDC’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management Program to better inform efficient and economic dam safety monitoring by studying how the use of fully grouted vibrating wire piezometers compares to traditional methods. The geotechnical community has promoted fully grouted vibrating wire piezometer installations over conventional piezometers because of their ability to successfully monitor multiple zones within the same borehole. This method also requires fewer drilled holes, resulting in a reduced overall drilling cost. To accomplish their data collection, ERDC researchers worked in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Nashville District, which provided the test site, and the Savannah District, which provided drilling equipment and expertise. 🚢🌊 Keeping the Mississippi River Navigable: The Role of Engineering 🌊🚢 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is undertaking a crucial task just south of St. Louis, Missouri – ensuring the Mississippi River remains open for navigation. Did you know the US Army Corps of Engineers has projects in Norway? The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District is working closely with U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, the Norwegian Defence Estates Agency (Forsvarsbygg) and the U.S. Embassy Oslo to deliver roughly $200 million in planned projects at the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s Rygge Air Station in Norway! The projects are funded through the U.S. European Command's European Deterrence Initiative using U.S. Air Force military construction funds. In addition to facilitating interoperability and training, the projects aim to enhance the readiness of Rygge Air Station to support the capability of U.S. forces, Norwegian forces, NATO Allies, and partners to rapidly respond to any situation in the region should the need arise. In collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District and Virginia Commonwealth University, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) has conducted studies to see if existing time-of-year restrictions – or TOYRs – on dredging are still necessary along the James River in Virginia. An important USACE mission is maintaining federal waterways to ensure safe, reliable and efficient navigation. To fulfill this mission, USACE conducts routine maintenance dredging to keep channel depths at required levels. However, there are TOYRs in place that prohibit dredging operations during specific timeframes due to concerns of negative environmental effects. For the James River specifically, the restriction of dredging in the spring is to allow anadromous fish the opportunity to spawn without impacts from dredging operations. This research has questioned the need for the existing TOYRs in the James River area and shown that removing the restrictions may provide a better outcome for the environment. Time-of-year restrictions on when dredging can occur have huge impacts and we're grateful for the collaborative spirit and agreements to a data-driven approach to revisit the restrictions on the James River. Potential triple-win here for the environment, economy, and tax payer.

While working to address the nation’s civil works and military engineering challenges, research at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) also seeks to minimize potential harm to sensitive ecosystems by developing innovative technologies and approaches that improve environmental sustainability and resilience. The future of surface ship support at Devonport Dockyard In their latest article, Navy Lookout, considers the potential upgrade projects at Devonport to accommodate Royal Navy warships into the next few decades. Devonport is fundamental the operation of the RN and is the largest naval support facility in Western Europe. The site can be divided into two main parts, the Naval Base which is owned by the UK Ministry of Defence and supports active vessels of the Surface Flotilla and ships undergoing Operational Sea Training. The base also includes HMS Drake, home to about 3,000 personnel and has Single Living Accommodation for 1,800 sailors and marines. The Dockyard, the main focus of the article, is a separate entity, owned and operated by Babcock International Group as a centre of deep maintenance and upkeep for surface ships, submarines and amphibious vessels as well as providing Fleet Time Engineering Support. The ‘One Devonport’ blueprint was published in 2021 and outlines proposed changes that may take place over a long period, equipping the base until the 2050s. The biggest element of the development work is the £750M Submarine Waterfront Infrastructure (SWIF) project which is now underway. Wetlands can have major impacts on development projects. Minor disturbances to wetlands require General Permits through PADEP, while major impacts to wetlands result in Joint Permits through PADEP and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Joint Permits typically result in an elongated permitting process which can challenge development timelines. Knowing that wetlands exist on a Site along with proactive research and design can minimize permitting requirements and their respective delays.
