Thank you Erica – and the team at Baylander – for bringing oyster knowledge and hands-on learning experiences to West Harlem! 🦪🦪🦪 #communityscience at its finest! #oystermonitoring

Lovely Saturday volunteering outside NYC's Baylander, a decommissioned Naval boat now serving as a bar, restaurant and "steel beach" on the Hudson River at 125th St. Baylander hosts several of Billion Oyster Project's Oyster Research Stations (ORS's) - shoebox sized cages full of oysters suspended around NYC. As a BOP Ambassador, it's always fun to share the project's work with others and, here, passersby could see some really fabulous oysters thriving in the Hudson! So much new growth and biodiversity in these cages - big healthy clumps of oysters plus tons of crabs, worms, mussels and (really big) grass shrimp! No fish though, perhaps because the current was so strong (look at the angle on the ropes in the water!) The Baylander does BOP presentations twice a month on Saturdays. Next up - July 20th. Come check it out and stay for lunch onboard! Big shout out to Ira Gershenhorn, Scott Koen, and Paola Garcia - my partners in crime for the day.
