Thirty-three years ago - toward what would end up being the end of Operation Desert Storm - the ordinance crew from Attack Squadron Three-Five (VA-35) loaded 22 Mk-82 500lb (230 kg) unguided, low drag general purpose bombs onto our squadron's A-6E Intruder. During the Persian Gulf War it is estimated that 4,500 GBU-12/Mk-82 were dropped onto Iraqi forces - all loaded by the strong backs of sailors and airmen. From the pictures below the task of uploading 22 500 pound bombs on a single aircraft is hard, back breaking labor. The burden of loading these weapons onto a four aircraft division only added to the daily stress and fatigue for the crew who worked tirelessly for more than 6 months. That's more than 45,000 lbs (22 tons) of ordnance - not to mention the time it took to prepare the weapons for safe release. The dedication and commitment by our Navy sailors never wavered - true unsung heroes of VA-35 and Navy Squadrons deployed in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. As a young naval officer, division officer, and squadron pilot I watched them toil, without complaint, instead joking and chiding each other to do more despite their exhaustion. On this given day I decided to help decrease their burden loading those weapons - just one sailor helping another - silently - without hesitation. SONO-buoys will soon be deployed from a variety of platforms, significantly enhancing our ability to blanket ocean areas. This capability is crucial, and it's promising to see its integration into unmanned systems. While adaptations on platforms like the MQ-9 are already in progress, the inevitable use of USVs will further expand this technology's applications. We can expect to see a range of sizes and configurations. For the Marines, having this advanced capability to support Expeditionary Advanced Bases (EABs) and other dispersed operations in the Pacific will be essential. In the coming years, we may also witness the development of anti-USV torpedoes. The concept of a shoulder-fired torpedo or integration into platforms similar to the HERO loitering munitions is fascinating to consider and could revolutionize our approach to maritime security.

1st Cavalry Division Headquarters deploying to Europe - Task & Purpose "The 1st Cavalry Division is one of several forces previously announced to be rotating into Europe as part of the U.S. defense presence there. Along with the 1st Cav’s headquarters and artillery, the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team (also known as “Ironhorse”) and 1st Combat Aviation Brigade (AKA “Air Cav”) are among others going to replace counterparts from the 3rd Infantry Division. In 1944, the tiny island of Peleliu was the site of fierce fighting during World War II, as Marines and Army soldiers fought to seize an airfield carved into its coral rocks. Eight decades later, the Marines have revived the historic "Sledge" airfield on Peleliu, demonstrating the strategic importance of the Pacific region. The United States Marine Corps recently recertified the Peleliu airstrip, which was essentially reclaimed by nature over the decades. Crews had to clear away vegetation and sweep the area for unexploded ordnance before the airstrip could be restored. This effort is part of the U.S. military's ongoing initiative to upgrade and expand its presence in the Indo-Pacific region, including building up the military presence on Guam and refurbishing other sites that date back to the early 20th century. The revival of the "Sledge" airfield on Peleliu is a significant milestone in the U.S. military's strategic pivot to the Pacific. It demonstrates the continued importance of this historic location and the dedication of the Marine Corps to maintaining regional stability and security. 🇩🇪🛳🛳 The German Navy has tapped Damen Naval to deliver two more Niedersachsen-class (F126) frigates, increasing the fleet's size to six. Construction will take place entirely in Germany, with Damen estimating deliveries in 2033 and 2034. Damen Naval managing director Roland Briene said the deal underlines the company’s role in modernizing Germany’s armed forces. “It is the quickest way to expand and modernise the surface fleet of the German Navy. This decision also benefits the German procurement organisation and the involved industry.
