📢 Today, Global Data Center Facility Summit 2024, themed "Power the Digital Era Forward," was successfully held in Singapore, bringing together over 600 leaders, experts, and partners from the data center industry. The event explored the trends and opportunities of intelligent computing, showcased innovative green data center practices, and unveiled the Outdoor PowerPOD, a cutting-edge power supply system.    Huawei's global service network, covering 170+ countries, was highlighted as a key enabler for one-stop data center services. [SSR Utilities] Artificial Intelligence and the Madness of Crowds, or Why Data Centers Won’t Overwhelm the Grid Hugh Wynne and Eric Selmon’s analysis of the power grid’s ability to supply the rapidly growing demand from new data centers has garnered significant interest among investors. In it, we highlight the regional nature of the increase in demand and the large excess of generation capacity in the regions where the new data centers are being built. We find that the scale of U.S. capacity reserves is sufficient, even in the absence of net new capacity additions, to absorb the growth in data center power demand over the remainder of the decade. As we witness a substantial shift in Europe's energy consumption driven by AI datacenters, the question arises: How can innovative solutions like smart grid technologies help us manage this surge while advancing our sustainability objectives? All this with 92% Green Grid before we look at any PPAs to get us to 100%. Now with 10 major networks at NBOX1 plus London Internet Exchange (LINX) where local peering with Microsoft is now available through the MAPS service, IXAfrica is super connected and growing fast, enabling East African and International companies to build and grow their platforms and access this vibrant market, all that whilst their carbon footprint is LESS THAN HALF that of a typical datacentre elsewhere. ✅Power Constraint: The primary issue facing data centers is not power generation but transmission and distribution. Current power grids struggle to meet demands, especially with AI's rapid growth, significantly increasing data center power consumption. ✅Dire Predictions: Marc Ganzi initially foresaw a power shortage in five years during the Berlin Infrastructure Conference. He revised this, saying data centers might run out of power in the next 18 to 24 months. ✅Permit Delays: In the US, obtaining permits for new data center power can take up to two-and-a-half years in Dallas, six years in Atlanta, and seven years in Silicon Valley. Europe faces longer lead times, with Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin seeing up to eight years. ✅Global Electricity Usage: Data centers consumed 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022, about 2% of all global electricity. This is expected to double by 2026, driven by computing and cooling functions. ✅Solutions: Addressing this requires creative solutions, like placing future data centers closer to renewable power sources for energy or grid independence. ✅Takeaways: These points underline growing challenges and the urgent need for innovative solutions in the data center industry to cope with rising power demands due to AI's rise.
