As someone who's going to become a father to a little girl shortly I'm thinking a lot more about what kind of world she's going to grow up in - it was a real honour to be able to help moderate the panel discussion, understand the challenges women face in the workplace and how it is changing for the better! The UN 2024 #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience is dedicated to #Women in #Science #Leadership: A New Era for #Sustainability. I have asked Women in Science Leadership, especially those in ECETOC: European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals and in my teams at Shell for the characteristics of their female role model (for the scientists among you n = 25). Interesting findings: 👉 Family, especially #grandmothers and #mothers are inspiring role models 👉 Several of the current Women Science Leaders had no female role models in their academic education, simply by the lack of women at that time. 👉 Strength, balancing a career and family life, respectful, kindness, generosity and radiating positivity and energy are characteristics of female role models 👉 What characteristics displayed your female role model? Employment industry of choice or by chance? Never heard or heard but only bad words? Heard that they work for the environment, but it's all a load of buzz. Seems like bias against #chemical #industry and image issues. (𝘐'𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯'𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵. But the impact is positive and significant, only unseen/hidden/overlooked ?, difficult for me to say) Great piece. An insightful evening at the She Goes Green event yesterday, held at the New York Genome Center and hosted by Women.NYC & Columbia University's Women in Energy Initiative. Learned a lot from the panel - Sustainability & Social Innovation Program Manager at IBM Jully Meriño Carela, Kearns & West VP Miquela Craytor, former US State Dept. Asst. Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment & Science Monica Medina, & wonderfully moderated by Columbia student in sustainability Anjaly Ariyanayagam. Some of my favorite takeaways: ✳ An multidisciplinary approach is key. Scientists, as highly specialized professionals, can be sometimes hindered by a narrow focus; creative risk-taking (which may be outside of standard accepted practice) is absolutely essential in driving the types of innovation required for sustainable practices in any industry, hence the need for non-science personnel in this arena. ✳ The misguided notion that "to care" is occupationally female, with careers that insinuate social responsibility & stewardship, much like nursing, historically being seen as pink-collar career paths. Sustainable practices require systems-level changes, which benefit from the types of non-linear, less singular-focused assessment methodologies seen in women leadership styles. #LifeScience #Sustainability #NYC #Women #Management #Career #Innovation
