Everyone who thinks AI will replace software engineers are: —VCs investing in those startups —Founders / employees of those startups —AI influencers who hype everything —People who wish they majored in CS —People who hate techbros Real SWEs are like "well.. it's kinda helpful". I think too many people trivialize all the things a good SWE actually has to do. "AI" might increase productivity, automate a bunch of tasks, but assisting to automating is a huge leap of faith. It could happen, but it is not inevitable like many would lead you to believe. Software engineering job growth is slowing because of multiple factors like - rising interest rates - revenue saturation of bigtech - overhiring in the past few years - products make running lean companies easy and definitely not "AI is taking over software" ~ Deedy Das via the 𝕏 platform

Funnily enough, I was thinking about this just this morning, and I arrived at exactly the opposite conclusion: at the risk of sounding like the IBM guy who predicted “no more than 5 computers,” I’m going to predict that software developers will go the way of horse breeders - there are still a few around, catering to some expensive or outlandish (or illegal!) needs; but the vast majority was doomed the day Henry Ford came up with the Model T. As for SWEs, most of them will be gone in probably less than 10 years. This is *absolutely* not because AI will write better code than us: on the contrary, it’ll be a disaster of incomprehensible spaghetti code, undebuggable and impossible to maintain, other than by AI itself, at huge computational expenditure. But think of it this way: did offshore customer support centers were “better” than the original onshore ones? Obviously not! The people there were (are?) less competent; poorly paid/trained; and have to make do with atrociously poorly-designed IT systems. And yet, they’ve become ubiquitous, along the “press 1 for this, and 2 for that, now tell me in a few words how can I be of help” (who thinks this was an improvement over… well, anything but a slap in the face?): the drivers are always the same - a “race to the bottom” to lower costs; improve (short-term) profitability; and CEOs and executives who are as greedy as they are incompetent. These same executives (who can’t tell a line of code from a hole in the ground) will be the same to fall hook, sink and line for the AI “we can code” hype and will condemn their user to some hysterically laughable buggy and unworkable software monstrosity, just so that they can bamboozle investors with more hype and cash in their options. Yes, AI is a great tool and I find it invaluable in my day-to-day work, using it on all sorts of tasks and I completely agree that it is a great assistant for us developers: alas, there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. It’ll be pretty sad to see a profession that has been at the mesmerizing edge between science, art and tradecraft end up the way of tapestry embroidery, but it’s also an inevitable reality.

I get asked a lot about how to pivot into AI right now. Here’s the simple playbook: 1. Build stuff, anything, every thing. Join hackathons. Publish what you’ve built and your lessons learned. 2. Learn python - yes you have to. 3. Join a startup! You will need 1. and 2. to join, but it’ll just skyrocket your abilities and your understanding from there.
