Great day at the inaugural Property Week ESG Edge Conference and Awards in London! Alasdair Ben Dixon and Jenny Gnadl joined discussions on the evolving ESG landscape in real estate, emphasising both opportunities and the mounting compliance challenges. With Alasdair up for two awards, they were encouraged by industry insights, BUT left questioning if ESG’s momentum is sustainable, especially given recent critiques. While we are motivated to keep pushing the boundaries in sustainable property management, some argue that ESG needs a sharper edge if it’s to drive real impact. Particularly good talks from Marylis Ramos / Savills Earth Advisory, Cathy Myatt / Chancerygate, Arun Thaneja / Winvic Construction Ltd, Linda Thiel / White Arkitekter, Tom Jordan / Barr Gazetas, Ness Scott / Greencore Homes, Alan Carter / The Land Trust, Jessica Pilz / Fiera Capital

Real estate is one of the world's biggest #polluters. But coming back from the ULI Europe Conference last week and MIPIM in March, it's hard to not feel buoyed about its #sustainability efforts. The self-awareness of those within the industry (they know many of their shortcomings) and actions being taken by occupiers, developers and investors are taking make it a worthy antidote to the #ESG backlash. Here's my take on why the old-fashioned tangibility of a building, even an energy efficient one, can rebuke claims that sustainable investing is 'woke capitalism' 👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/gBJcG6RM #realestate #property #ESGbacklash #oped #opinion #Mipim #Urbanlandinstitute #propertydevelopment #propertyinvestors

As the world focuses more on sustainability, the real estate sector needs to adapt to new rules and expectations. The Taxonomy Regulation and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) require detailed reporting on sustainability practices. Right now, this applies to the largest property owners, but by 2025, mid-level property owners will also need to comply. Key regulations like the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) aim to reduce emissions through renovation and new construction. The new Construction Products Regulation (CPR) sets ambitious targets, such as renovating the worst-performing non-residential buildings by 2030 and achieving a 26% improvement by 2033. Here are 5 steps to tackle ESG in real estate by Colliers Baltics Sustainability expert Liga Horsta Reach out for more details!
