As we kick off September, we're excited to shine a spotlight on an important celebration that honors the vibrant cultures, remarkable histories, and countless contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Hispanic Heritage Month, spanning from September 15 to October 15, is a time to come together and appreciate the rich tapestry of our nation's diversity. 🌎 Origins and Significance The journey of Hispanic Heritage Month began with a vision to promote the essence of Hispanic-American culture, hailing from regions including Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. What began as a weeklong observance in 1968 evolved into a month-long commemoration of heritage, with President Ronald Reagan signing it into law in 1988. 📜 A Date of Significance The choice of September 15 as the starting date is symbolic, commemorating the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. The month also encompasses the independence days of Mexico and Chile, and includes Dia de la Raza or Columbus Day on October 12. Let's make this Hispanic Heritage Month a time of unity, growth, and celebration. Together, we can embrace our differences and honor the shared experiences that make us stronger as a nation. 🎉🎈 #HispanicHeritageMonth #EmbraceDiversity #CelebrateCulture

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating the contributions, cultures, histories, and traditions of generations of Latinx and Hispanic Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Hispanic Heritage Month is unique in that it crosses over two months. This time period was chosen because September 15 is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18, respectively. Belize celebrates its independence day on September 21. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and was expanded in 1988 to a 30-day period by President Ronald Reagan. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988. Latinx history is American history. Modern Widows Club recognizes and honors the immeasurable achievements of the Latinx and Hispanic American community which have enriched our society and culture and helped us build a stronger nation.

Hispanic Heritage Month, which spans from September 15 to October 15, is a time dedicated to acknowledging the accomplishments and contributions of inspirational champions within the Hispanic American community who have motivated others to strive for success. This observance originated in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week during President Lyndon Johnson's administration and was later expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to encompass a full 30-day period. It officially became a law on August 17, 1988. National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally shines a spotlight on the diverse cultures and significant contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans, celebrating a heritage deeply rooted in the histories of all Latin American countries. The term "Hispanic" typically denotes individuals from Spanish-speaking countries or those with ancestral ties to such regions. Conversely, "Latino," "Latina," "Latine," or "Latinx" generally describes individuals from Latin American countries or those with roots in those nations. The choice of which term to use is often a matter of personal preference. Due to the close connections between Latino and Hispanic American identities in the United States, National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations frequently encompass the recognition and inclusion of Latino Americans as well.

As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and this year's theme of Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power and Progress in America, we'll hear from a few teammates about why they feel prosperity, in terms of financial wellbeing, power and progress are necessary to be seen and belong. Today, we hear from Yesenia: "I feel that prosperity, power, and progress are necessary to be seen and belong because despite the obstacles we face on a daily basis, we strive to be and do our best at all times. We are breaking barriers and showing America that we too are capable of helping build prosperity and growth. Our power to come together as a community to help and inspire others has a huge impact on society. That feeling of belonging and acceptance is important for everyone as a human being, as that shapes who we are and who we want to become."
