Network Rail says that passengers are benefitting from an upgrade to the large expanses of glazing at both ends of Stoke-on-Trent station. As part of a multi-million-pound investment, the infrastructure manager has completed work to replace Stoke-on-Trent station’s timber framed glazed walls – known as ‘gable ends’. It said that the upgrades would keep them safe and reliable for decades to come. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

Extra tunnels included in £6bn East West Railway Company scheme The Government has unveiled details of the proposed East West Rail project following its commitment to fund the project in the last Budget. Plans include a new section of railway between Bedford and Cambridge, including building new stations at Tempsford and Cambourne, and upgrades to the existing railway between Oxford and Bedford. Bowing to pressure to reduce the project’s environmental impact two tunnels are now proposed for the new stretch of railway in Cambridgeshire. Design engineers have also worked to reduce costs and have removed or reduced the height of embankments and viaducts for over half the route between Bedford and Cambridge. The cost of the project has now risen from a previous upper estimate of £5.3bn to £6bn. Of the total around £3bn will be direct construction cost. These would include two new railway tracks next to the West Anglia Main Line from Shepreth Junction to Cambridge Station, a new platform, platform extensions, footbridges, and building upgrades. A cut and cover tunnel beneath the A428 and Bourn Airfield development A 700m tunnel through Chapel Hill near Haslingfield to avoid constructing a large cutting, which could affect the flight paths of local Barbastelle bats. Green traction power in the form of discontinuous electrification with hybrid battery-electric trains, to reduce carbon emissions and reduce disruption during construction. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh MP said the scheme would create “more than £6bn in economic growth”, 28,000 new jobs and tens of thousands of new homes. “Today marks a major milestone for the project as we encourage communities to have their say on this transformational line that will offer so much more than simply getting people from A to B,” she added. https://lnkd.in/ey7RgPya

#RatesEquity solved another barrier to more homes being built in Australua. Rates Equity means all property owners pay the same rates regardless of zoning or property use. No targeted rates or developer contribution costs. Just a single annual rate of between 1.0%-2.0% of property value for all properties with limited rebates for elderly low income homeowners/social housing and penalty rates for vacant properties. Rates Equity lowers the cost of building new homes considerably and also lowers rates for productive small businesses. The current system of low residential rates and property taxes pushes house prices higher. It also favours rental property investors over productive businesses.
We are full steam ahead with the Suburban Rail Loop. It’s Australia’s largest housing project and will mean faster and more reliable travel for Victorians. It will help deliver thousands more jobs where they’re needed – right next door to jobs, services and world class public transport. On Sunday the Premier, Jacinta Allan and I announced that the contract to build the second section of tunnels has been awarded Global consortium Terra Verde will be delivering the $1.7 billion contract and building twin 10km tunnels between Glen Waverley and Box Hill. Terra Verde, consisting of Webuild, GS Engineering and Construction, and Bouyges Construction Australia are world leaders in this work. You’ve probably heard of their work - Grand Paris Express, the Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth and the Metro Tunnel. We’re not stopping the Suburban Rail Loop because the alternative isn’t something we can accept. 2050 will be here in the blink of an eye and we’ll be a city the size of London. Those who oppose the project would rather we do nothing to prepare. They’re fine sticking their heads in the sand and taking the easy way out. Instead we’re putting the work in to build more homes, ease congestion, combat sprawl and help our city grow.

🛤 Network Rail prepares for £3M Perthshire bridge replacement 🛤 Network Rail is preparing to start a £3M #bridgereplacement in #Killiecrankie, Perthshire. Work on the Rannoch Road bridge, off the B8079, will see the #existing #bridge deck replaced over a period of six months. Engineers from #NetworkRail and contractor AmcoGiffen will also make alterations to the bridge abutments to accommodate a new concrete arch deck on the 128-year-old single-span structure, which sits over the Highland Main Line. In order to allow traffic to continue flowing, a #temporarybridge will be installed before the existing one is removed. Network Rail scheme project manager Susan Menmuir (Rennie) said: “#Renewal work such as this is essential in allowing Network Rail to #maintain and #improve our assets across Scotland’s Railway. “This is a significant piece of engineering and not without its challenges. Not only are we replacing the bridge deck, we’re also installing a #temporarystructure next to it and within a tight space. However, this allows vehicle access to be maintained for the community during delivery of much of the works. “Replacing the 128-year-old bridge will ensure that work on this scale will not be required for at least another 120-years.” The six-month programme is set to start on 2 September and run until March 2025. It is part of a £1.95bn modernisation programme of railways in Scotland. Access at Rannoch Road will be maintained apart from over two consecutive weekends when the existing bridge is demolished and the new bridge is installed. This will be done over two consecutive weekends of extended engineering works, with no trains running on the line, from 30 November to 2 December and 7-9 December. Community drop-in sessions are being held later this month for residents and businesses to ask questions about the work. Menmuir added: “We are grateful to the community for their patience while we complete this vital work.” https://lnkd.in/eGgyzCRW

Our team was selected by the Massachusetts Port Authority to construct the Logan Airport NCEC Project, a 725,000-square-foot new Terminal E Parking Garage in the existing parking lot. The multi-story structure will feature 5,000 parking and ground transportation spaces. The project also includes the construction of a vehicular bridge connecting the existing central parking complex and a new pedestrian bridge connecting the new garage to Terminals E and C. In addition, modifications will be made to Arrival and Departures level roadways to accommodate access to the garage. Solar PV panels will be installed on the garage façade and roof to offset electricity consumption, and the project will seek a Parksmart certification for the Garage to be issued by the Green Building Certification Institute. Team selected to design new toll-free, eight-lane Massey tunnel The next stage of design for the new toll-free, eight-lane tunnel to replace the George Massey Tunnel will advance this summer with selection of the Fraser River Tunnel Project’s preferred proponent, Cross Fraser Partnership. The new crossing will replace the George Massey Tunnel with a toll-free, eight-lane immersed tube tunnel that includes three general-purpose travel lanes and a dedicated public transit lane in each direction. The new tunnel will also feature a separate multi-use path to support walking, biking and other active transportation options. Building on the extensive design work already completed by the Province, the project now enters the development phase, which allows a transparent and collaborative approach to tunnel design, and agreement on project costs and risks between the Province and Cross Fraser Partnership. The final design and cost submission will culminate in a design-build agreement. The Cross Fraser Partnership team that will collaborate with the Province through the development phase is comprised of Bouygues Construction Canada Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd., Pomerleau BC Inc. and Arcadis Canada Inc. The environmental assessment continues in parallel with the development of the project design and early works with major construction starting in 2026.
