ESG & Social Performance-Sustainability, Conflict Management and Local Development Professional. Engineer & PhD in Social Sciences.

A few days ago now, I flew to Australia to attend my PhD graduation ceremony in Brisbane. My study journey at CQUniversity Australia was originally commenced with two strong motives, as follows: 1)    Once upon a time my Mum had big dreams for me and imagined me going to Higher Degree at University, One day she grabbed my hand and said “Make Difference through Hard Work and Perseverance” but just after two days she passed away in 1999 when I was still attending primary school, Because of that I had the will but do not have the money to go to school, Because of this I looked for doors of opportunities to ensure my mum’s dreams live on me, As a result I received support and guidance from some incredibly wonderful people over years, Until finally I graduated and yet I know now that on this day my Mum looks down on me with pride. 2)  Combining experience in academic research and practical exposure at the forefront in complex operational environments are core elements for decision-makers to use a mixed position to convince key stakeholders in society. This can be more effective when daily work duties are constantly subjected to the reality of the academic studies. Fourteen years ago today, I joined extractive industries by the force of attraction, driven by the desire of contribution to do natural resources development justice in mineral-rich countries and to balance the interests of key stakeholders including operators, regulators, and project-affected communities. Five years ago, I embarked on a PhD journey at Central Queensland University Rockhampton to better approach large project-induced costs and benefits in an analytical way. Today is a particular honor for me and I am proud to celebrate this achievement in this great Country of Australia, a place of hope to so many people, where chances remain open to all. I would like to give enormous credit and thanks to my Supervisory Team John Rolfe and Susan Kinnear and people who have made a significant scholarly contribution, some of whom have included Deanna Kemp, John Owen, Nick Bainton, Paul Rogers, Saleem Ali, Daniel Franks, Gavin Hilson, Bruce Harvey, Blake Repine,Pierre Buck Berner; as well as friends and colleagues who provided support and encouragement: Jean Claude Diplo, Terry Mulpeter, Lawrence Manjengwa, Greg Winch, Graeme Hancock, Famoussa Kamara, Dr Lynda Lawson, Sarah Mackenzie, Julie Boulton MSc, Luke Stephens, Patricia Myriam Isimat-Mirin, Neala Gillespie, Louise Westgate, Dr Kathleen Turner FAusIMM (CP), Colin Hodgson, Sheila Atunika Asiam, Dr Michele Fulcher, Stephen Perkins, Pierre Ehoussou, Kwasi Ampofo, Erkan Yildiz, Wilfried Y. During my time with Newcrest Mining at Bonikro I got to know some great individuals who seem to be naturally equipped to perform their allocated functions. Several of them just had the ability to navigate through the complex social issues that we faced at the time. One such person is Diakite. We went through a steep learning curve as we interacted with local leaders and communities trying to establish mutual trust and collaborative understanding. Thanks in large part to the ability, skills, patience and commitment of people such as Diakite, who played a key role helping Bonikro and local stakeholders to find common ground and the necessary trust and respect to collaborate on key issues. Beneficial partnerships were forged that are lasting and going a long way toward establishing mutual trust.   Well done on your very deserved academic achievements.

About eight years ago at a mine site in Cote d'Ivoire I meet a young man who was managing some very difficult issues around the mine and internally. That was Diakite! I spent time in the field with him and discovered he was also studying in the evenings towards his Masters. He has gone on to do even more! Anyone looking at his CV can't help be impressed by how comprehensive his field experience is, all backed up by on-going scholarly learning and qualifications. Congratulations Dr Diakite! Stay with the journey!!

Congratulations dear Diakite Mory , Thanks for the great work done to achieve this goal over these hard long years. You've get there. We are all proud of you. Thanks to all these great people for their support.
