Thrilled to announce about our nomination alongside Civic Engineers for the Infrastructure award at The Pineapples 2025 for Kingsway in Stretford for Trafford Council 🍍 Previously an arterial route with two lanes of traffic in either direction which severed the town-centre, it has been turned into a place-focussed route prioritising active travel and pedestrian permeability. Led by Civic Engineers we were able to contribute to the collaborative and iterative design process for the proposals for Kingsway for improving green infrastructure and creating an enlarged public realm with extensive 'play on the way ' integrated into the completed landscape. Shaun Lyons, Associate in Exterior Architecture Ltd Manchester studio adds, "Kingsway serves as a pioneering example of what can be achieved by taking a place first approach to Highway Design. It is great to see the completed scheme being used in so may ways by the people of Stretford and, combined with the wider Stretford Mall masterplan, will continue to improve connectivity, biodiversity and climate resilience for Stretford for years to come." Congratulations and good luck to all, we’re looking forward to the Festival of Pineapples with The Developer and Festival of Place 👏 #Pineapples2025 #ExteriorArchitecture #LandscapeArchitecture #Collaboration #PublicRealm #Connectivity #Kingsway #Stretford #GreenInfrastructure 📸 Civic Engineers

This approach is possible in every town & city the world over. Take an existing building (don’t demolish it!), refurbish it and then build in wood an extension on top (wood is lighter than concrete & steel so you can add more floors = create more space). This is the best possible approach to tackling climate breakdown ie recycling what we already have and creating the new out of sustainable nature based materials.
Exciting times at 123 Golden Lane 🚧 We’re thrilled to see Conamar officially take possession of the site as construction gets underway, marking the start of something special, where we’re proving that progress doesn’t mean leaving the past behind. This project is all about balance, preserving the building’s historic character while adding two new floors of sustainable, mass-timber construction. It’s a bold approach that raises the bar for how we build in London, blending heritage with innovation. We’re incredibly proud of how quickly this vision has come to life. A huge thank-you to Waugh Thistleton Architects, Webb Yates Engineers, CHP, and Quartz Project Services for bringing creativity and collaboration to every step of the journey. We’ll be sharing updates throughout 2025 as 123 Golden Lane comes to life. Watch this space! #123GoldenLane #MassTimber #SustainableWorkspaces #UrbanTransformation #BywaterProperties

Loved being down in London yesterday and attending NLA's Retrofit Summit at The Guildhall. Heard some great speakers taking us through interesting case studies such as the The London Museum, The Elephant / 318 Oxford St, New Zealand House and Zodiac. Was pleased to also see some iconic Northern projects shared with the audience by shedkm and Civic Engineers including Fort Dunlop, Littlewoods and Park Hill. Retrofitting can be a cost-effective alternative to demolishing and rebuilding, however it can also present significant challenges (and costs) especially with older buildings that have outdated systems or poor initial construction (‘bad bones’). Some insightful discussions amongst the panellists with agreement on some key points: · A requirement for more consistent government policy as well as what actually defines Zero Carbon / Net Zero · More collaboration and data sharing across industry with the need for data to be richer. · Better cataloging of building information and materials used providing invaluable information for future retrofit. A requirement for a central place to access this data - more transparency. · All buildings need a strategy to decarbonise. · Not all buildings are fit for retrofit. · Retrofit requires passion, commitment, communication and a champion(s)! Today, the #RetrofitSummit at Livery Hall, Guildhall explored how adaptive reuse and circular principles are injecting new life into old buildings, sponsored by Civic Engineers and shedkm! We heard exciting presentations on the best practice projects, strategies and programmes happening across London and the UK, and explored how we can achieve shared knowledge across the industry, the importance of engaging communities in #retrofit projects, and the need to integrate retrofit into wider stories of affordability, sustainability and placemaking. Thank you to our speakers Valeria Segovia, Gensler, Hazel Rounding, shedkm, Clare Harrison, The Crown Estate, Tom Stoneham, HUB, Ruth Oates, Buro Four, Mari Samuelsen, Fletcher Priest Architects, Steve Sanham, Common Projects, Festus Moffat, John Robertson Architects, Andrew Davidson, Studio PDP, Dr. Austin Entonu, MBE, MBA, ACCA, PRINCE2 and CFA, Greater London Authority, Kirsty Draper, JLL, Gareth Atkinson, Civic Engineers, and Oli Pye, Montagu Evans. Thank you NLA for the Retro fit summit, and to shedkm Civic Engineers HUB RESIDENTIAL LIMITED The Crown Estate Gensler Buro Four JLL Common Projects for the talks and case studies. Must admit retrofit as a new type of project description is glossing over that most of us have been doing this for years as cut and carve or refurbishment but if it gives focus to retaining as many existing buildings as possible then I’m with it. The case studies were impressive amd the effort clients and teams will go to, to reduce, reuse and recycle. Good to see so much of Londons existing stock being refurbished. We should not only focus on the cut and carve and the structure issues but also on the simple workspace refurbishment and getting more clarity on the supply chain circular economy and clear certification of accreditation of new products especially M&E where the majority of the cost is. Most simple refurbishments throw away the old finishes and services and most of us I feel would push for recycled products from the circular economy if we had a database or some form of accreditation to refer to. Anyone agree? I liked the concept of architects redesigning the past, that struck a chord.

At The Pulse of Amsterdam, where everything and everyone comes together, accessibility plays a significant role. Located just 150 metres away from Amsterdam Zuid station, The Pulse already offers exceptional access to public transport and the A10 highway. But that’s not all – through parking and charging facilities, we are prepared to accommodate approximately 1300 cyclists! Additionally, for those using more than just two wheels, 126 parking spaces will be provided, all equipped with a charging station. Our goal is to increase the number of shared mobility parking spaces, making it easier for everyone to embrace a more sustainable way of getting around. That is why 45 spaces are assigned to the shared mobility concept. One critical advantage of New Urbanism is that it blends residential, commercial, and retail spaces within the same multi-family development. This approach fosters a strong sense of community, making it easier for residents to connect and engage with their local environment. Morris Square in Charleston is a prime example of how small-scale developers can successfully implement New Urbanism. Allison Ramsey Architects played a crucial role in this vibrant, mixed-use community, designing everything from single-family homes to large mixed-use buildings alongside townhouses, a duplex, and a quadruplex. For small-scale developers, the growing focus on multi-family housing within New Urbanism represents more than a passing trend. It marks a significant transformation in the way cities are planned and lived in. In 2007, Plan B Engineering was asked to provide a design to stabilize the Renwick Ruins, once known as the Smallpox Hospital. This hospital complex, a creation of James Renwick, Jr.—renowned for his Gothic Revival masterpiece, St. Patrick's Cathedral—had fallen into ruin after years of neglect. Despite this, its distinctive granite gothic facade presented a unique opportunity for preservation through careful stabilization and repair. We focused our efforts on stabilizing the facade walls still standing, preventing any further deterioration or collapse. This step was crucial in preserving a vital piece of New York City's architectural legacy. As a result of our work, these ruins have withstood nearly two decades of storms and exposure, remaining intact as they await transformation into a public park. Today, as part of a broader initiative, there's a push to reinvigorate this historic site in memory of those we've lost to COVID-19, transforming it into a space of remembrance and reflection. This endeavor bridges the gap between the past and the present, offering a place for the community to honor the past while embracing the future. Plan B Engineering is honored to have played a role in preserving the Renwick Ruins, and we look forward to seeing this landmark evolve into a cherished community space. The field of landscape architecture needs to address the moral and ethical implications of the projects we take on. Historically our field has been complicit in the displacement of communities of color through highway construction, urban renewal projects, and redlining. And these mistakes carry forward to the current day. From years long construction projects causing the failure of large and small businesses along 16th Street, large suburbian gentrification projects in Aurora, and creating a Larimer Square that is unaffordable to nearly everyone but the wealthy, we must ask ourselves what role we play in the destruction of our city.
